I keep thinking about this song like an Ear Worm, and it gets more fascinating as I do it.
I think I posted it before, but I'm not sure.
It's the Monkees, but it's more Michael Nesmith. When I see the most popular video, I get pissed Mickey Dolenz clowns through the whole thing. I guess that's his job and they could have done other takes where we wouldn't see it, but he's crapping on a Great Song.

I really enjoy the human pathos portrayed --

Just a Loud-Mouth Yankee I went down to Mexico
I didn't have much time, just about a week or so
There I Lightly took advantage of a Girl who loved me so
And then I started thinking that the Time ... had Come ... to Go

(Chorus)
What am I doing hangin' 'round? I should be on that train and gone
I should be riding on that train to San Antone.
What am I doing hangin' 'round?

She took me to a garden just for a little walk
I didn't know much Spanish and there was no time for talk
Then she told me that She Loved Me not with words but with a Kiss
And like a fool I kept on thinking of ... a train ... I could ... not ... miss

(Repeat chorus)

It's been a year or so and I want to go back again
And if I get the money, I'll ride the same old train
BUT I GUESS YOUR CHANCES COME BUT ONCE AND BOY I SURE MISSED MINE
and still I can't stop thinkin' when I hear ...

some Whistle ...

... Crying

(chorus)

(and I emphasize the word "crying.")

That is a very familiar theme! For some reason I associate it with Beverly Hills Cop, but looking it up, no, it's not related to it.

reply

It's probably familiar because MTV played it all the time at the end of 1983 and it won five MTV Video Music Awards in 1984.
