Movies that are intellectually dishonest?

Oliver Stone's JFK. Any others?

jfk is a very good choice. a truly deceptive movie.

i watched a mike leigh film called high hopes this past week, & had a strongly negative reaction to it. i've liked every mike leigh to this point, but i think he was very unfair in this film. the way he portrayed the thatcherite viewpoint was a caricature, not a reality imo. if you want to attack a viewpoint, at least have the decency to steelman your opponent's beliefs instead of strawmanning them.

reply

Mike Leigh is a Top 10 director of mine, but I didn't like that movie at all (or Mr. Turner)

reply

haven't caught mr. turner yet. it's been on hoopla for a good spell, but i always have settled on something else to this point.

there's a good amount of leigh that i haven't seen on the new criterion service, so i'm going to work my way through those first.

If you tell me what you like, I might be able to give you some good recommendations.. I think I've seen every feature film, and almost every TV Play of his.... I prefer Ken Loach.

"Nuts in May" was on YouTube last time I checked... Some might not like it, but its very metaphorical about co-existing. "Naked" is a great one, better on the second viewing.

reply

hey, thanks.

i've seen:

high hopes (obviously)
naked (which i loved)
all or nothing
happy-go-lucky (divisive it seems, but i couldn't get enough of it)
another year

any recommendations would be appreciated & likely acted upon.

i just checked & it looks like nuts in may is still on yt. it looks like it clocks in at a pretty tidy 1hr20m, so i might give it a watch today or tomorrow.

i'll also happily take any ken loach recommendations you'd care to make. he's a complete blind spot for me, haven't seen a single one of his films. i've had kes on my watch list for a spell, but otherwise know almost nothing about him save his reputation.

reply

My pleasure - I'm here partly for that reason. You've seem to have seen most of his best.. check out "Meantime". Not the best start, but it gets better. I like "Nuts in May" more, but its a bit weird for some. But very allegorical if you think of the big picture.

Ken Loach
-Riff-Raff (Robert Carlyle is in this for those who just like Begbie from 'Trainspotting')
-Looks and Smiles
-Raining Stones
-Poor Cow
-My Name Is Joe
-Ladybird Ladybird
-Hidden Agenda

Some say "The Wind That Shakes The Barley" is his best, but I don't like period pieces with costumes. If they were regular movies, I'd love to watch them. But those movies seem to exaggerate language, and spend so much time on costume, but then again, its Ken Loach, so I'll definitely see it, just not sure when. "Kes" is also pretty good, I'd get subtitles (unless you're from the UK).

My favorite English movie is probably "The Loneliness of a Long-Distance Runner".. I liked "Peeping Tom", too.

reply

thanks again. i see meantime is on the criterion channel, so i'm going to give it a watch this morning. & thanks for the loach summary. i actually tend not to enjoy period pieces as well, for the same reason you do. & i do struggle with thick uk accents, so subtitles are usually a must for me.

The following is an incomplete list of films based on actual events:

Since I’m not well versed in films, I would appreciate input from those who are. Maybe single out some from the last 30 years which have been embellished as it would take forever to critique all that are listed.

When reviewing films about the “Titanic”, one that caught my eye was Hitler’s propaganda film about the “Titanic”. I was not aware of this.

The Day After Tomorrow

Almost anything with a political slant to it.

The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
Pearl Harbor (2001)

and to an extent The Great Escape (1963)

reply

I've been to the (real) River KWEI.... The movie location is in Sri Lanka, when the appropriate place is Kanchanaburi, Thailand...... Nice place, spent 9 nights there.
