Box office performance ≠ Quality

Stop equating box office performance with the quality of a film. They are mutually exclusive. Case in point:

Films like Shawshank Redemption and Children of Men bombed at the box office. Films like Transformers and Minions were box office hits.

I miss the days when no one either knew nor cared about box office and budgets. It's all too often the go to for supposedly proving a movie is good or bad.

THANK YOU! Was just thinking this when I posted on the Captain Marvel board just now.

It's depressing to see only talk of box office money as opposed to the actual film.

Totally agree. Too many people judge the quality of a movie by its box office performance. The same thing goes with critical reviews. Seems like a lot of people are unable to think for themselves and hate or like a movie because that's what the critics said.

I feel the same way about NHL hockey. I converse with a bunch of great guys, but there is an emphasis on playing junior General Manager. What really nettles me is all the Tanking talk, teams losing intentionally so as to get a better draft pick. Plus a lot of cap and contract talk which isn't so bad but it takes away from the simplicity of rooting for your team to just keep winning on a regular basis.

Unfortunately snepts, that's what happens when sports becomes a business rather than just a sport.
And professional sports is just that ... a business.

You're not going to get much of an argument here.

But I do find it bizarre that on some boards, people are obsessed with BO ratings of various films. People guessing what it'll be, and getting into fights over it. I don't get it, because as you pointed out, it has nothing to do with the quality of a movie. But, whatever blows one's hair back, I guess.
