Died 25 years today. Here he is as Pavoratti

I always appreciated his style of comedy - fun and good-natured. No profanity or cruel humor ever, and he was well loved for it.

His character in Planes, Trains and Automobiles was simultaneously annoying/lovable/sympathetic/ hysterical. Not sure how many actors if any could've pulled it off as well as he did.

reply

He was versatile.

Totally agree. It was a very nuanced performance and showed he was capable of nore than just comedy. He could have gone on to be a very good straight actor.

I still find that movie entertaining to watch multiple times, more so once you know the story as you pick up on more little subtle hints from his performance each time.

John Candy was the most lovable son of a bitch that has ever lived.

I could tolerate any insurance seminar. For days I could sit there and listen to them go on and on with a big smile on my face. They'd say, "How can you stand it?"

I'd say, "'Cause I've been with Del Griffith. I can take anything."

You know what they'd say? They'd say, "I know what you mean. The shower curtain ring guy. Woah."

reply

Although he made a lot of really good films, this one is definitely my fave ...
