Is The Shawshank Redemption the greatest movie of all time or the most perfect?

It is the highest rated movie on imdb by users. Has been for years.

I just watched it yesterday for probably the 3rd time.

I don't see it as the greatest movie of all time but I can see it as a movie where you'd give it an A+, so I understand why people give it a high rating. It deserves a high rating.

It's got a great director. Great cast. Great script (Stephen Kings words) and a clever twist. It also has lots of dark moments which makes you feel for those stuck in that hell hole.

I like how it isn't a movie about trying to clear ones name, they leave the question of guilt or innocence out of it for most of the movie, more a story of survival in an injust place. A story of beating the system.

Shawshank Redemption is a good movie, but I don't think it is in the running of greatest film or most perfect. There are hundreds of better films.

reply

Yo Allaby, I'm really happy for you, Imma let you finish but Shawshank is the best movie of all time... of all time!

reply

Nah, it isn't even in my top 250. There is no way Shawshank is better than 2001, Psycho, Persona, Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver, Godfather, Citizen Kane, 8 1/2, Pulp Fiction, 12 Angry Men, or Wizard of Oz just to name a few.

reply

I agree with you All

reply

I must be the only person in the world who doesn't like this movie.

You're a virgin. Well well...

Yes my manhood...Don't tell anyone

I'm impressed, pop. Now let's see if you can stay at a 10 foot distance from me.

reply

Can you? Of course not...You love me

reply

I have to. No way does that pole fit into my basement.

What is with you? And this basement obsession of yours?

I only saw this once back in 1994 and I thought it was decent enough but its reputation has grown over the years. A 9.3 rating seems a bit high from what I remember. I have to re watch it.

reply

You should. It's great.

reply

Neither.

That distinction goes to 2001: A Space Odyssey, the greatest and most perfect of all time. It's the only movie I have ever rated 10/10.

reply

Ive never seen it. Always mentioned but it’s never on tv so I’ll have to find it online.

reply

It's been on TCM quite a bit lately.

It's a fantastic and mesmerizing masterpiece. It's available on Netflix. Here's the classic 1968 trailer:

I rated it 10/10 too. Just not only that movie has ever been rated 10/10 by me.

You have excellent cinematic taste.

It's an inside joke on IMDB that it got top polling over The Godfather and other noted films in history. No Academy Awards wins. No Golden Globe wins.

reply

At least it's better than some Academy Awards winners.

reply

I agree with that. Was trying to point out that it was a popular movie, but not one considered to be a contender for the greatest movies of all time. Neither was Dark Knight Rises, but that's up there, too. Don't get me wrong, I liked both movies and do accept the IMDB poll. However, the poll doesn't consider the best movies of all time and compare them to each other. It's just the way fans and movie watchers rated them and how they ranked. I would think re-watchability has something to do with it.

reply

I'm not sure what makes this such a good film, only to say that I've never met anyone who didn't like it.
I've seen it countless times & while it's not my usual genre there's just something compelling about the whole story and the acting makes it all feel so natural.
I think the reason it remains at the top is that appeals to such a wide range of viewers.

reply

The ending was a little hallmark.

reply

Nope. Not even close. It's a good film, but extremely overrated. It's like 8/10 at best. It's not worthy of being #1 on the Top 250 imo. Maybe in the 200+ range, but not #1.
