Anyone got any hobbies ?

I collect double edged safety razors, both new and vintage.

Here is a vintage Gillette Super Speed Red Tip which is one of the razors in my collection:

Lately I've been roasting my own coffee. Some people do that with popcorn poppers; I went ahead and bought this:

http://www.amazon.com/FreshRoast-SR500-Automatic-Coffee-Roaster/dp/B0034D9ONO

It takes a few tries to get it right, but once you do, the difference between truly fresh coffee and the stale stuff on Walmart's shelves is amazing.

reply

Whoa the black beast ! That looks like one serious coffee bean roster ! I'm a tea drinker myself but I know that people can be very particular about their coffee.

reply

Actually, out of the decent coffee roasters out there, that's one of the less expensive models. And, it only roasts small quantities -- 90-100 grams of green beans, which end up being around 75-90 grams of roasted beans. (The picture probably makes the thing look bigger than it is; on Amazon's page, it gives the roaster's dimensions as 6 x 6 x 13 inches, which sounds about right.)

I'm not a heavy coffee drinker, two mugs in the morning and that's it, but one batch doesn't quite last me for three days. Fortunately, a batch takes only about 20 minutes to do.

If anyone's reading this and thinking of trying this, I'll give a plug to my vendor. Here's where I got the roaster plus some different coffees to try:

I found pretty quickly that trying to roast by sight/sound/aroma isn't worth the trouble. Maybe those Old World trained master craftsman roastmeisters can do it; well, good for them. But for us mere mortals, a thermometer is absolutely mandatory:

Very nice!

That's a cool razor. Good design. Is the red tip Bakelite, or is it more recent than that?

I used to have a few hobbies, but Life has gotten in the way for the past 5 years, so none for now.

reply

The red tip is just painted on. These Red Tip razors typically date from the 1950's and were all metal construction. It is regarded as among the nicest looking standard production turn-to-open razors.

reply

Nice paint job. Looks like a different material just looking at the photo.

I can respect this
Keep at it Sam...writing is cathartic, a good stress reliever and a fine way to put your thoughts down in the written word
Im pretty awful at it but it helped me to write stuff down because it was a fun game to word things right and then REALLY figure out what i was trying to say
Good for you man!

I think the more you write, the better chance you have of figuring out what your writing style is. Maybe that's why your style keeps changing; you just haven't quite found your true style yet. Keep it up!

Youre welcome
Some people claim that writing (fiction, a diary, researched History, etc...) is a good way to stay on course in life and i believe them

reply

Pretty cool
I like antiques as well
I have a bunch of collections...knives, old farm tools, firearms, Vinyl records, Comic Books, some nice furniture pieces, fossils...
Do you have a nice display case?

reply

Oh nice ! Do you collect old vinyl records or more modern music ? Display cases are a bit of a problem. To have something nice and the right size etc you have to make it yourself and that sort of work is beyond me. So I just bought some adjustable cheap clear plastic hardware boxes for storing little bits and pieces and use those.

reply

I LOVE the classics...modern Rock leaves me a bit cold-it sounds boring to me tbh
I have EVERYTHING from Rod Stewart to Iron Maiden on vinyl lol...i just buy the noise i grew up with (pushing 375 records now)
Im a big antique fan
So i bought a bunch of old soda and produce boxes from the 30's-60's (They usually sell for $10-$20 depending on the labels and the metal rimmed ones go for more) and they look great on the shelves (i bought reproduction shelving as the originals were out of my price range at the time)
Im putting together a great music room but man is this stupid hobby expensive!

Very cool collections. I like antiques too.

Once upon a time I decided to have a collection of some sort, because I'd never had one before and thought it'd be a new experience. For some reason I don't even remember and was probably pretty random, I decided on 🐰s. (Stratego will like this!) Any kind, except live.

Figureines, paintings, prints, antiques, vintage, whatever.

Oh, now I remember how it started. I found this very cool abstracted little clay handmade figure of a bunny in a thrift shop. I called it the icon of The Ancient Cult of the Bunnies. (It had that look, although I have no idea how old it is.) It grew from there.

Soon people in my life knew about it and gave me bunnies. Lots of them. For years. My collection fast outgrew the antique display case I had them in, and I didn't want my walls covered with bunny stuff either. Plus a lot of them were too twee and I didn't even like them.

One of my favourites though was a trio of cheap plastic bunnies I named The Mean Bunny Family. A mom, pop, and baby. Whoever did the handpainting on them went a bit heavy on their eyebrows, which all slanted down in the middle, making them all look like they'd had the worst day ever. I still have them, and the original Ancient Bunny Cult icon in storage.

That sounds pretty cute
I love pet rabbits
I spend a lot of time on my little gang ( 4 female + 2 male.. LopXRex hybrids and a fuzzy black lionhead...loveable goofballs all of them )

reply

I'd forgotten you have real life buns, and 6 of them, no less!

I've only had one, back when I was a kid. He was your standard white bunny with pink eyes. Along with a cat, dog, hamsters, mice, chameleons, horned toads, leopard frogs, a guinea pig, and a squirrel I rescued from my cat who'd raided his nest, and raised from a wee thing until he was big enough to be released.

reply

Wow!
Quite a mini-pet Zoo you had
im very impressed!

reading - yes I consider reading a hobby-also hiking , cards, dominos
used to collect coffee mugs & shot glasses - when I get my shit together , room wise, I will resume collecting them

reply

What are your favourite books?

I'm surprised to see anyone mention cards and dominos. They're both great games, I just don't know anyone who plays them anymore.

reply

My kith and kin have played cards ( poker, cribbage , canasta , spades...) and dominos (straight, 42,moon) all our lives.

Books : Sometimes A Great Notion , One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Lonesome Dove, The Last Picture Show, The Stand( Stephen King ) and many, many more too numerous to mention

reply

It's nice to know someone still plays cards and dominoes.

Nice list. A Kesey fan.

I like to read - a lot. Another hobby that I haven't had much time for lately is researching my family history. One of these days I'll get back to it - a good hobby for winter, actually. I've discovered quite a few things about both of my parents' families. I'd like to be able to confirm or discard some of the family "legends."

reply

Oh yes family history research is a very valuable thing to do. You can learn so much and it helps you to gain some understanding of the mindset of previous generations. It can be a very sad business at the same time of course.

Prior to doing my own Australian family history research I had been told that I had 50% English and 50% Scottish ancestry. But it turned out that I have around 70% Irish, 19% Scottish, 10% English and 1% Cree Indian ancestry. A very different picture that I had no idea about.

It kind of messed with my sense of who I was actually as I had always regarded myself as being Australian/English when I was really Australian/Irish which is quite different when you think about it.

reply

Yes, I discovered that one of my ancestors came from Canada. I've also located one who came from the Netherlands, however I've yet to prove if he was Dutch or possibly a German who happened to take a ship from Amsterdam.
