What did you watch on this delicious week? (05/20-05/26)

Hi everyone, I thought I'd post my rating system witht his weeks's views. If you care to share yours, do it.

10: Masterpiece/ Favourite
9: "A" Awesome!
8: Very Good
7: Good
6: average
5: BElow Average
4: Bad
3: Awful
2: Did not finish-Might give second chance
1. Did not finish- No chance

My Week:

Wind River (2017 Netflix) : “ A veteran tracker with the Fish and Wildlife Service helps to investigate the murder of a young Native American woman, and uses the case as a means of seeking redemption for an earlier act of irresponsibility which ended in tragedy.” A true, simple and effective crime drama with good actors and beautiful, cold settings. Worth every minute but doubt I’d ever rewatch it. 7-7.5/10

Carrie (1976 TV): Some people LOVE this movie, some HATE it. I liked it. The slow-motion scene was too long, most scenes were good and only a few were disturbing. That's what I was hoping for, to be disturbed. Especially with what I read about the final scene and the prom scene. Prom scene was cool, final scene was weak. I really enjoyed the scenes with the mother. Especially the one where she cuts vegetables. So; solid acting, respectable directing, crazy story makes for a good film. 7/10

Cars 3 (2017 Netflix): I haven’t seen the first two Cars but I really enjoyed that one and I don’t understand the 1/10 and 2/10 reviews claiming their consternation and shock toward the last part of this movie. It’s uplifting, fun and the graphics are a big 10/10. I saw a lot of critics toward the way the movie handle the subject of aging. Apparently, cartoons don’t have the right to age. An hour into the movie the jokes start to get old themselves but apart from that, I had no problem. Oh and btw, his name in French is better I think; Flash McQueen. Say it, Flash McQueen. Way better than Lightning McQueen. 7.5/10

Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle (2017 DVD): “Four teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.” My friend told me this movie was a 7.5 quality wise and a 9.5 entertainment wise. He had me convinced, he got me fooled. It’s not bad but I only laugh 2-3 times and not big ones. If not for the actors, this movie has very little to offer. 6-6.5/10

The first three episodes of "Patrick Melrose" with Benedict Cumberbatch on Showtime. He's my favorite actor at the moment. I loved him in "Sherlock" (9.0), and he is excellent in PM also. (8.5/10).

ah, different taste here; I can't stand the guy. I think it's his face so it's not his fault.

Interesting. Well that's why they make chocolate and vanilla.

Wind River 8/10 and Carrie 9/10

Blade Runner 2049 (2017 Netflix DVD): "A young blade runner's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former blade runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years." Stars: Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Ana de Armas 8/10

The Return of the Evil Dead (1973 Netflix DVD): "500 years after they were blinded and executed for committing human sacrifices, a band of Templar knights returns from the grave to terrorize a rural Portuguese village during it's centennial celebration. Being blind, the Templars find their victims through sound, usually the screams of their victims. Taking refuge in a deserted cathedral, a small group of people must find a way to escape from the creatures." Stars: Tony Kendall, Fernando Sancho, Esperanza Roy, Frank Braña 6/10

Welcome to the Punch (2013 Netflix): "When a notorious criminal is forced to return to London, it gives a detective one last chance to take down the man he's always been after." Stars: James McAvoy, Mark Strong 7/10

Glad to see our systems are very similar. I would only change your #3 to ''Bad''.

I will see Blade Runner 2049 soon

i think my rating system more or less tracks along with what others have posted.
a 5 is perfect to me, achieves everything you'd expect from the film.
3 is average, enjoyable but likely flawed or inconsequential.
0 is irredeemable.

my week in film:

hellraiser (1987) 3/5 i've never quite thought hellraiser was as imaginative & sick & disturbing as its more passionate advocates claimed, and this week's rewatch didn't really move my opinion. but it's still pretty good. fairly well acted for a horror movie, fun creature designs, cute girl. all the boxes are properly checked off. it's just not fun or wild or trashy or insane enough for me to fully embrace it, & in that way it's always been a mild disappointment.

breakfast with curtis (2013) 3.5/5 utterly meaningless, but harmless and fun. it's knowingly quirky for sure, and it's a good thing it's not a minute longer than it's fairly brisk 82 minute running time, but thoroughly recommendable if you want something aimlessly sweet and pleasant to accompany an evening.

kedi (2016) 3.5 documentary on stray cats in istanbul. ymmv as the kids say, but i loved watching 7 cats & how they live in istanbul for 80 minutes. the camera swoops along with them in fun ways, and it's actually quite sweet, even moving to see how they impact the lives of the people they live with.

loveless (2017) 4.5/5 'An estranged Russian couple going through a brutal divorce both have new partners and want to start over until their 12-year-old son disappears after witnessing one of their fights.' ever so bleak. my god, it was bleak. tarkovsky/stalker level bleak. actually also reminded me of a darker, more emotionally true version of three billboards... in a way that i can't quite specify. interesting drifting camera shots. neat droning soundtrack. it moves at a cold, dark pace, but it seemed just right in terms of length and feel.

but it's bleak.

riki-oh: the story of ricky (1991) 3/5 riki punches holes in peoples heads & stomachs, a guy tries to strangle him with his own intestines, etc. it's a lot of fun, and i finally found out where the 'man smashes other man's head' comes from.

Loveless: bought it, should see it in the next coming months.

riki-oh: I expected so many laughs and over-the-top violence; I got the violence but it was not half as funny as I hoped. 7/10

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) - 4/10

How's come, rock?

I found it very pretentious and boring. The film's narrative is one we've seen a thousand times before. That of a disconnected middle aged man struggling to make a connection with others, until he SEEMINGLY meets the perfect girl, who he sleeps with for one night but whom ultimately, he has to depart from. The problem is that I simply don't find the characters engaging. Michael is a guy who seems bitter and disconnected from the world, but we never see why. We never see what is it in particular that makes him so bored and fed up with his family, and we don't know much about his prior relationship with the other woman in the hotel other than that they broke up. For me, it's not enough to simply know that he's depressed, but WHY he's depressed.

I didn't find his relationship with Lisa all that compelling either. I get that perhaps the two's scenes are supposed to come off artificial, as though Michael is just seeing what he wants to see in her and not the real thing, but I still just don't find these scenes compelling. And like Michael, I don't really feel like I know Lisa either.

Everything else about the movie either strikes me as gimmicky or heavy-handed. I honestly don't know why Kaufman felt the need to tell this story in stop-motion. Yes, it looks good, but it honestly serves no purpose to the narrative. The story could have been told exactly the same in live-action, and at worst, it detracts from the overall experience. Such as in the much talked about sex scene, which honestly came off kinda funny to me. And the whole movie is littered with metaphors that are either too spelled out or just not very subtle. To Michael, everyone sounds the same, except for Lisa. To illustrate this, Kaufman has everyone other than her be voiced by one actor, Tom Noonan. It's kind of a clever idea on paper, but I hate how Michael has to come right out and say it during one of the two's more intimate moments together. Same thing with the title.

That's why I thought it sucked.

Stout materiel, rock.

Thank you. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Benjamin Button: I enjoyed it the sole time I saw it. 7.5/10 for now.

Hi Stone...im late to the party as usual:/

Wind River and Carrie were both excellent/missed your others
I saw:

Because of the Cats: A gang of upper class young punks terrorize Amsterdam and its environs as the worlds goofiest cop hunts them down (seriously, this cop is never not smoking, drinking with suspects, getting his ass kicked or sleeping with a prostitute...this guy is a scream lol)
1973, Mod style, shocking violence, frequent nudity...highly recommended!

J. Edgar: Leo is top of the food chain imo...i cant NOT watch this guy
Great biopic of the late FBI boss and his whole resume of dirty tricks
I understood his passion to stamp out Communism and crime but his methods were often questionable
This was a very fine movie

M.F.A: Clint Eastwoods daughter stars as an assaulted college girl who goes after her attacker and discovers that vigilanteism feels really good...then she starts to go too far
Nothing new here but the main character was performed well and it was good food for thought

Shimmer Lake: excellent cast in a Coen Bros style crime drama-
Some out of nowhere violence, dark humor and a good story
Im really tired of the old 'shuffled timeline' gag at this point
I prefer a straight start to finish narrative
Still, pretty damn good Coen Bros rip-off

reply

I've seen like 90% of Leo's filmography and J. Edgar is one of those I haven't seen. I never was tempted to see it... might rely on you and give it a try someday.

reply

Please do...Leo's appearance is just too different but he NAILED the bully-boy bravado and late life angst perfectly!

reply

...you know me, Yonk, would I like "Shimmer Lake?"

reply

Oh yes i believe you would
Its a hard bitten tale of a dirty small town robbery gone haywire and a cop that just wont stop...very Fargo-ish

The only problem i had was that it had a Pulp Fiction timeline thing going on...scenes were played out of order to give them more impact ( i really dislike this trend...i like a start to end story)
Otherwise very good and twisty
Go for it Culburn

reply

Good, I think I have it on my Netflix. I'll bring it up next. I'm slogging thru "Una" at the moment. Have about 20 minutes left.

Thanks, Yonk.

Enjoy

Deadpool 2. Not as good as the original, but not bad, 7.4/10. Hint: Don't leave when the credits begin to roll. You'll miss some more bits.

Definitely plan on watching it. Thanks

Tonight I saw "Adrift", the true story of a couple adrift in the Pacific for 41 days after their boat was heavily damaged by a hurricane. I enjoyed it, and would give it a 7.5/10. Of course I'm a sucker for survival stories, especially ones which occur at sea.

😎

reply

is this based on a true story ???

reply

Yes it is. In fact, they say at the beginning, and I quote: "This is a True Story." At the end of the movie they tell about the real people who were depicted in the film. That's what makes it so good, imho. It's true, it's not just something from a writer's imagination. Of course truth is often stranger than fiction.

If you're interested in this type of story, you should also check out "Open Water". It's based on the true story of two scuba divers (man and wife) who were accidentally abandoned by a dive boat during a trip off the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. I saw it, and it totally freaked me out, because something very similar almost happened to me on a dive trip. It was a very emotional experience.

thank you - I did see open water

You're welcome. What did you think of it? Are you a scuba diver?

I like these survival movies also. I can't even swim
