What did you watch this week bud? (14/01-20/01)

Hey bud, I had a super dark week, check it out:
(btw, I call girls ''bud'' too)

Hidden Figures (2016 Netflix): I found a few high notes amid a linear and rather mundane film, but those high moments were really good. The topic of racism was not very subtle but it did not affect too much. I expected more out of this one. 6.5-7/10

Creep 2 (2017 Netflix): ’’A video artist looking for work drives to a remote house in the forest to meet a man claiming to be a serial killer. But after agreeing to spend the day with him, she soon realizes that she made a deadly mistake.’’ It managed to be a solid sequel with yet another strange and witty script. I might be slightly in love with the psychopath character of Mar Duplass. If I had to be murdered I’d want it to be by him. He’s such a smooth talker.
7-7.5/10 (rated the first one 7.5)

Super Dark Times (2017 Netflix): ‘’ Teenagers Zach and Josh have been best friends their whole lives, but when a gruesome accident leads to a cover-up, the secret drives a wedge between them and propels them down a rabbit hole of escalating paranoia and violence.’’ I was impressed by the cinematography. The directing and acting was solid and the script was genuine but also trivial. That was the main weakness. Otherwise, the trigger scene was really intense and the finale was even more. I was literally feeling bad for the characters. Gewrd Jerb. 6.5-7/10

The Babadook (2014 Netflix): First off, know that this is not my genre of film. It was really well executed though. Good acting, good directing but the story felt pretty standard to me. We got a monster that could be resumed like this: A hat on a hat-hanger, a coat on a coat-hanger, boots and long fingers. Weird. Then, in the last 30 minutes we get a mix-bag of horror so much that it felt like they threw everything in there just for impact(even a little Home Alone) but it did not hit me hard. The word Babadook is really fun to say though, especially like the monster says it. 6/10

Gerald’S Game (2017 Netflix): ‘’ While trying to spice up their marriage in their remote lake house, Jessie must fight to survive when her husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her handcuffed to their bed frame.’’ I liked the first 15 minutes, then I wasn’t sure anymore, then it got even better and better. There are some ‘’Yeah Right’’ moments but the ideas behind them are so good that I managed to look past them. This movie freaked me out way more than Babadook did. 7.5/10

I have seen them all except Hidden Figures.
I also love the guy in both Creep movies. He is a lovable psycho
Super Dark was fairly good for an indy movie
Babadook was a let down as are most horror films today
Gerald's Game was average 7/10

We are watching the same game

Guess I've also had somewhat of a " dark week " watching quite a bit of Mafia's Greatest Hits on AHC :
https://moviechat.org/tt3311486/Mafias-Greatest-Hits. Pretty damn compelling and informative about the evolution of organized crime in the country. 8.5/10

Street Smart - https://moviechat.org/tt0094056/Street-Smart This really surprised me ! I almost didn't watch it. The movie actually progressed into a taut little thriller, carried imo, by the chillingly accurate performance of Morgan Freeman as a volatile, vicious pimp. 6.5/10

You got some interesting views this week.

Thank You For Your Service (2017) - Another movie about three soldiers back from Iraq suffering from ptsd which is based on true events. Maybe Hollywood has gone back to the same well too many times. This movie seemed to be ignored. Some good dramatic parts but it was dry and boring imo. Also Amy Schumer in a serious role ?? 6.5/10

A Ghost Story (2017) - This has Casey Affleck standing around covered in white sheet stalking his late wife. Going in I was going to give this a 5 or so but it is strangely compelling. 7/10

Man in the Attic (1953) - Jack Palance plays Jack the Ripper who rents an attic from a London couple. Jack falls for their very attractive niece played by the beautiful Constance Smith. Great premise not well executed. 6.5/10

Inferno (1953) - An underrated movie with my favorite underrated actor Robert Ryan. Ryan is left to die in the desert by his wife and lover. His wife is played by the very hot Rhonda Fleming. Great fight scene at the end. 7.5/10

Race ( 2016) - A movie about Olympic athlete Jesse Owens and his journey to the 1936 Olympics where he garnered four gold medals. I watched this because the guy who played Owens was from Toronto and I have never heard of him. The movie was average. Always risky to portray Hitler even in a non speaking role. 7/10

None of yours but I bought Race a few months ago.

I didn't watch any movies... I'll make up for it next week (need my fix 😉)...

I watched one TV show, The Man in The High Castle... A show about an alternate reality where Germany and Japan rule the USA having won the 2nd world war... I completed the 2nd season (i've been watching for weeks)... It's good, very TV in it's plot focusing on daddy issues and such with lots of running around for nothing but season two is where it gets interesting and we see a bit more of how the world has changed... I think it's worth watching if you're into TV shows, if you mostly watch movies then it's less compelling... I think the first season could have been three episodes instead of ten... I think I'll read the Philip K. Dick book that it's based on as that aparently is more about this alternative world and the ideas rather than crying about "Trudy" and Joe's crybaby daddy issues... Coupd have worked better as a mini-series with a decent budget...

I saw Creep, but not Creep Two.

Meanwhile I just viewed three of the four episodes of the original Dirk Gently TV Show (2010 and 2012). I'll view the fourth and last later today. I really enjoyed them, and I think they're actually closer to the Douglas Adams books that the 2016 show. What I can't understand is why the pinheads at the BBC pulled the plug after only FOUR friggin' episodes!! IDIOTS!!

I've also begun the excellent Preacher series. It's on DVDs, and I can hardly wait until the next one arrives.

I've also begun the Netflix series Atypical. It's okay so far.
