What have you watched this week friends? (12/03-12/09)

Hi there, nice to see you again.

My week:

Dogma (1999 Blu-ray) : “An abortion clinic worker with a special heritage is called upon to save the existence of humanity from being negated by two renegade angels trying to exploit a loop-hole and reenter Heaven.” I love the cast of this movie and I like the concept but some dialogues are too long so it slows the movie down. I did not remember the final act was so bloody, lots of fun. 7/10

Mallrats (1995 Netflix): “Both dumped by their girlfriends, two best friends seek refuge in the local mall.” Loved it then, still love it now. Major nostalgia factor but this film is pure entertainment on its simplest level. 7.5-8/10

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994 Netflix): “A goofy detective specializing in animals goes in search of the missing mascot of the Miami Dolphins.” 15 years ago I probably would’ve rate this 10/10 but now, realistically, it’s more a 7/10.

Machine gun Preacher (2011 Bluray): ‘’ Sam Childers is a former drug-dealing biker tough guy who found God and became a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children who've been forced to become soldiers.’’ This was a nice surprise for me. The story is powerful, gripping and touching and it was well executed by everyone involved. The scene where he goes to the bank for a loan especially got to me. My only complaint would be the editing. I know it’s on purpose but Im not the fan of the erratic style. 8/10

T2 Trainspotting (2017 Bluray):” After 20 years abroad, Mark Renton returns to Scotland and reunites with his old friends Sick Boy, Spud, and Begbie.” As a fan of the first film, I was really scared to watch this and had a bad feeling but I was proved wrong. I loved it. The getting back together, the reminiscing, Spud stories… I rejoiced in it all. The last act was surprising and well played.I remember Mina saying she didn’t feel Boyle’s touch but I did. I thought the directing was solid and the movie looked amazing. 8/10

I watched seven movies this week. There are three themes - they are recent movies and all are dramas. The third theme is my wife watched all seven with me - no horror/sci-fi/gratuitous violence/blood and gore:

Foxcatcher (2014) - this was nothing special. Carell didn't look anything like Du Pont. The documentary on Netflix is better. 7/10

Stronger (2017) - an average movie with decent performance from Jake Gyllenhaal who plays a Boston Marathon bombing survivor. 7/10

Manchester by the Sea (2016) - a solid movie with a great performance from Casey Affleck. Well deserved Best Actor Oscar. 8/10

The Theory of Everything (2014) - Redmayne was great. The movie was sugarcoated to make Hawking more likeable. An average movie. 7.5/10

We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) - a little gem of a movie. A BBC production which follows a woman as she deals with her psychopathic son and the terrible crime he commits. Tilda Swinton was very good as was the young actors who play her son. 7.5/10

Sully (2016) - I expected this to be a borefest but Eastwood made this into a pretty suspenseful drama. Great crash scene and Hanks is great as usual. 7.5/10

The Imitation Game (2014) - loved it. A very good WW 2 era movie. Alan Turing was a hero who finally got the recognition he deserved. 8/10

Man, haven't seen any of those but Stronger looks interesting. Sully looks boring to me too.

reply

hey, what about mine, have you ever seen any of them? I bet you did!

I watched Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri. This was an excellent and gripping film with some humor thrown in.
There were also plot turns that took me by surprise. "Wow! I did not see that coming!" Frances McDormand was excellent!
Woody Harrelson and the rest of the cast were also good. I give it an 8.8/10.

As to your films, I've only seen two, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Trainspotting. I loved Ace, probably the funniest film Jim Carrey ever made. As to Trainspotting, all I can say is if I ever had any thought of trying heroin (I never did.) this film would cure me of the urge.

Premature Burial (1962, US)
A man who suspects that his father was accidentally buried alive develops a fear that the same will happen to him, and descends further and further into hysteria as he becomes more certain that it will happen.

The Masque of the Red Death (1964, US)
An evil Italian prince, who delights in tormenting both his own peasants and his fellow nobles, decides to hold a masked ball in his castle. He kidnaps a peasant girl and her family from a local village, and then, learning that a plague is sweeping through the area, seals up his castle with his guests and captives inside. He forces his guests to play violent games to the death while attempting to corrupt his captive peasant girl into worshiping Satan.

The Children of Huang Shi (2008, China)
In the late 1930s during the Sino-Japanese War, a British journalist sneaks into Nanjing to document the massacre as it's taking place. Things go awry and he almost gets killed by the Japanese, but is rescued by resistance fighters who smuggle him deeper into China to recover his health. He ends up recuperating in a home for Chinese war orphans, where he befriends an Australian nurse and a Chinese communist guerrilla who persuade him to take over managing the orphan home. He gradually bonds with the children in the home and becomes their protector and teacher. When the Japanese army advances into the area, he's forced to take the kids on a dangerous trek far into western China to safety. Based on a true story.

Haha Premature Burial looks awesome just from your description.

reply

It was pretty good. I didn't say as much about it as the others just because the plot was pretty uncomplicated, but I really liked it, good psychological horror movie.

Magnificent Butcher (1979 Amazon Prime) - Entertaining, Martial Arts comedy with Sammo Hung. Pretty silly film, but it was funny. A case where the questionable dubbing works with the film. 7/10

Dead Hooker in a Trunk (2009 Netflix Blu Ray) - I believe one of the first full length films from the horror darlings, the Soska twins. It was a pretty big disappointment given how much love those two get. The film looks like it was made for pennies, but its really the story, cinematography, and acting that kills it. 4/10

Death Walks on High Heels (1971 Shudder) - Luciano Ercoli first Death Walks film featuring his soon to be wife, Nieves Navarro. Its a pretty good gaillo film with an OK mystery. The exposure of the killer was pretty silly but film moves along well while being surprising restrained in its overall gore and nudity. 7/10

Death Walks at Midnight (1972 Shudder) - Luciano Ercoli second Death Walks film again featuring his soon to be wife, Nieves Navarro. The film is not a true sequel, many of the same actors playing different characters in a new unrelated story. This film is not as good as the previous. The acting with some of the leads is a little better and the ending was better as well. This film features less gore and nudity than the last. 6/10

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017 Netflix Blu Ray) - Its not as good as the first film, but still a very well made and entertaining movie. While I know this film is supposed to be funny I think the film lacked a serious enough villain. 8/10

Yes, Madam! (1985 Blu Ray) - A fun martial arts cop movie starring Michelle Yeoh and first timer Cynthia Rothrock. The martial arts from the female leads was very good and you can see how Rothrock was able to build a modest career from her ability alone. The film is hurt by its comedic elements which I think are a little to heavy handed for the seriousness of the primary leads. All around a good film. 7/10

In the Line of Duty (1986 Amazon Prime) - A "sequel" to Yes, Madam starring Michelle Yeoh, but an unrelated story and playing a different character. This movie is not as good as the first and Yeoh's character is a little less serious in this one, which was a touch odd given this film as a whole is more serious than the previous, yet she has some great fight scenes here. This film is hurt by Michael Wong and his romantic comedy style character being dropped in a film with a lot of violence and death. He was very out of place in the film. Also the way the final confrontation was brought about at the end was pretty stupid. However the film was still very entertaining. 7/10

Wolf Warrior (2015 Netflix) - This film gets some flack as Chinese propaganda and that is a fair criticism. However its hardly alone in making that kind of ra ra film for ones home country and armed forces so it doesn't bother me. The problem here is the film simply as a whole isn't really well made, especially a certain CGI scene that quite frankly should have been edited out of the film. While it's made clear Adkins team in the film is a bunch of badasses his decision making from point of contact with his target on is highly suspect and his team when it does start to fall, they fall too easily. As a result he isn't quite the badass the film initially tries to sell you. Lead actor (and director) Jing Wu is good here and his action scenes are for the most part well done, but he is a Rambo style character who blows through damn near anything that would kill a normal man. The ending fight with Adkins was a missed opportunity here as well. I have seen WU and Adkins in many movies and they really could have done something special here but it seemed too short and not as exciting as I would have hoped. I did like the movie overall even with its flaws. If you were to tell me this film would spawn a movie that would make nearly 900 mil in global BO, I would have thought you were high on something. 6/10

Well I have only seen Mallrats and Ace Ventura. I will always enjoy ace so it’s an 8/10 for me. I like Mallrats but I have not seen it since it was new so from my hazy recollection I will go with 7/10.

I never had much interest in Dogma but may give it a watch one day

I still have to watch Trainspotting but once I get to that I will check out part 2.

Machine Gun Preacher has been on my streaming list but it had expired before I got to it. I plan on catching it eventually.
