My mom, who will watch almost anything that's on, said "Ode to Billy Joe" was depressing as hell. "Cool Hand Luke" was also disturbing. I can name a few others which ended unexpectedly badly but that would mean posting spoilers.

Forgot about Million Dollar Baby. I usually avoid these movies like the plague but I'm a big Eastwood fan and I got duped into watching it.

I have never been able to watch Schindler's List ... how horrible and depressing.
It got so much acclaim, but when I started to watch it it was depressing as hell.
