actress manner of speaking

So many young women sound like yappy little dogs. They speak so fast, from the back of the throat, that you can hardly understand them... Lea Michelle on the Mayor is a big offender, and so is the redhead on Kevin probably Saves The World.

Many newscasters are bad about it too.

Amen. And a lot of older actors mumble their friggin' lines.

"I Am the FBI."

reply

I thought it was just me, I was just saying today, these actors talk so fast you almost have to read subtitles,

reply

I end up turning on subtitles about half the time these days.

reply

Even worse is the dreaded "vocal fry"...😱

reply

Yes that's what I meant by back of the throat. Couldn't think of the term for it. I had one male professor who promised to down grade us if he had to struggle to understand us. It's amazing how quickly it goes away when there is incentive.

reply

I always thought the term made little sense, as opposed to the quite clearly labelled "uptalk" -- another favorite of young women. Where they end every sentence with an upward inflection? As though it were a question? Even if it's not? 😂

reply

That "uptalk" drives me insane! I hear people do that all of the time. It either sounds like a question or it sounds as though the are talking down to you..... as though the person they are talking to is an idiot.

reply

Right, it sounds like they are checking in at the end of every sentence to make sure you are still following along.

reply

Exactly!

reply

I do wish that more of these people would learn to e-nun-ci-ate!

reply

It may not be the actor. It may be the director or producer. I know for a fact that the broadcast show The West Wing and the HBO series Deadwood used digital technology to speed up the dialogue, the point being to force the audience to listen more carefully.

reply

ahhhhh, that makes sense, sometimes I can't believe how fast they talk, but that technology is not new at all, about 10 years ago I bought an electric piano that could record what I was playing, and I could speed up or slow down the speed of what I recorded, not really a big deal but what amazed me was that the pitch or the tone stayed the same, so if they speed up the lines, the actor's voice will stay the same instead of sounding like the chipmunks,

EDIT:.......however...."the point being to force the audience to listen more carefully"

To speed up the voices might just be a timing thing, if they need another 30 or 40 seconds they could get it that way.

reply

Having to pay attention and listen more closely is one thing.
Having to turn on closed captioning in order to figure out what they are saying is quite another.

reply

That might be true if it were all of the actors speaking so fast, but it's not.

reply

I've watched many interviews in the past and it didn't seem that she/he is talking too fast. The only moments when they talking too fast is when they are at the premiere of the movie.
