a whole slew of canceled TV shows

I think I watched two of these

I haven't seen any of them and have only heard of a couple: Sleepy Hollow and The Knick. The Knick was supposed to be good, so too bad it's canceled.

reply

The Knick was originally conceived to be 3 two season story arcs... so you can watch those two seasons and still get some closure. Too bad they didn't do the other seasons, it was an excellent show.

reply

Good to know. I heard it was an excellent show, but probably too bloody/graphic for me.

reply

Yes, if you are squeamish... it wouldn't be good to watch.

reply

The Knick was awesome!!!!

reply

Yeah, it was disappointing news when they decided not to go on with it. I don't know if Soderbergh wanted to continue but if he did, maybe Netflix or Amazon will offer to pick it up.

reply

If it doesn't get picked up, I can live with the ending we got.

reply

Yes but they were going to a True Detective/Fargo like thing where they would do another 2 season story arc twenty years in the future with a new cast to show the medical advancements in the 1920s. Then another one in the forties. It all sounded very interesting. But I do agree they did give us a decent end to that part.

reply

Smart way to do it, especially with big name actors in the cast. And since it's been axed, extra smart, since we actually at least have some closure for this particular arc.

I'm still upset about the rude way Carnivale was axed with no closure at all.

reply

Yeah, I've never watched that show or Deadwood because friends told me they didn't end properly. In fact I tend not to watch shows with poor ratings for fear of this very thing happening.

reply

That's a pity, they're still great viewing experiences. I still give shows like that a chance as many people put a lot of work into it, and just because tv powers that be fail us, doesn't mean we have to be entirely robbed.

reply

Oh I probably will still watch them at some point, but that's why I've hesitated. In a small way it's like dating a dying person in that you don't want to fall in love with someone who will be gone soon but you can still get something good out of the experience.

reply

Great way of putting it!

I sometimes miss characters of shows (even those that had proper endings!). Like Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder in Justified.

reply

I've only seen the first three seasons and then I got sidetracked... I definitely will finish that one!

reply

OMG OMG OMG now I'm jealous - I wish to have those 3 seasons waiting for me. Not that I don't have my fair share of series to play catchup with. (Like "Hold and Catch Fire" and "Better Call Saul")

reply

Yeah, there is always something to watch... and if you wait ten or twenty years... you can always rewatch it again (unless you have a photographic memory)

reply

Sorry to bring politics into this, but I think it has to do with Trump and this economy. Since the economy is tanking, productions have less money to play around with. This is the result of exec producers not wanting to invest in these shows.

Additionally, this could also be due to Spectrum's monopoly on cable. Since they have come into the picture, cable prices have skyrocketed. This is going to decrease the overall amount of viewers and thus, the amount of $ generated by the networks.

So really, a combination of the above is going to destroy t.v. series.

reply

Nah, it's mostly piracy as well as the options on the internet in general that are killing traditional television. Lot of young kids will just watch short youtube clips and channels. Most young adults have cut the cord and will not pay for cable. Everyone enjoys this golden age of television with dozens of cable options, but few other than baby boomers are willing to pay for it. If you look at tvbythenumbers... ratings go down every season. Shows with fractional ratings now get renewed, that would have gotten cancelled immediately in the old days. The cable companies raise the rates because there are fewer and fewer customers. When the baby boomers die, so will much of tv.

reply

When are we projecting the baby boomers to expire by? Just curious.

reply

If they are born between 1946 and 1964, you figure most will be gone or senile by 2044. A lot of the young boomers know how to cut the cord and pirate so you figure sooner if you go by older or pre boomer cable subscribers.

reply

Man, that is a lot of time.

Well then, we will just have to wait and see.

reply

The one thing that could change things is rules on Net Neutrality. If wealthy corporations have access to faster speeds than the average person... all of sudden Netflix and Amazon have a huge edge over pirate sites and the game changes again. I doubt Net Neutrality gets overturned though... I think the people might riot if government starts overregulating the net.

reply

People riot, but did you just see the most recent news article? The attorney general of the U.S. is calling for harsher punishments on crime. There will be no riots because the government we have right now is almost Stalin like.

Additionally, since the party in office is pro-corporation...

reply

I'd say you'd be right in almost any case other than regarding the internet. The internet is the opium of the 21st century... it's the only thing keeping people everyone peaceful and submissive. If you cut it off, people would finally wake up... right now we are like the coffin people in The Matrix.

CBS is taking a long time to announce their cancellations. Pure Genius, The Odd Couple and Code Black were all good but will probably be cancelled. Scorpion, Criminal Minds, NCIS New Orleans and Macgyver were renewed but ratings were down so they could be in trouble next year. Blue Bloods, Madam Secretary and Hawaii Five O are still doing well.

reply

Good news about Scorpion! Just love the cast of that show even though the "science" can be pretty far out. Since the show ended on a major cliffhanger this year, I am glad that it will be back. I've had the disappointment of watching several shows which ended with cliffhangers and then were cancelled. How mean is that?

No Ordinary Family was good but it ended on a cliffhanger, so did V, and a few years ago, Forever was cancelled after one season and a cliffhanger ending. I am just about finished with network dramas. They sucker you in and then the networks cancel them. The only shows which don't seem to get cancelled are the myriad Law and Order and CSI shows which seem to have the half life of plutonium. lol

reply

The season finale for Scorpion is actually next week and I read reports saying that it won't end on a cliffhanger, good news, guess they'll get rescued somehow.

reply

Really? Good to know! I must have misunderstood something. 'Duh' for me! lol I really thought it was the season finale.

reply

2 Broke Girls just got the boot, surprising, it had decent ratings and was expected to get renewed. They had a good run, 6 seasons were enough.
