Darth Vader is alive, well and working as a hospital tech in Tennessee

General Discussion - News, Rumors & Gossip
(CNN) You probably think Darth Vader died on the Death Star back in "The Return of the Jedi." But no. He's alive and well and living in Tennessee. Darth Vader Williamson, 39, is a surgical technician at St. Francis Hospital-Bartlett in suburban Memphis. read full story on CNN

Umm... no. Don't name your kid "Darth Vader". Why the hell would you want to name your kid after a villain, let alone a villain with so much emotional and physical burden? Do you want them to become a mass murderer? And becoming a surgeon of all things is rather ironic, considering all of Vader's mutilations.

If you want to name your son after Star Wars, go for something simple, like Luke, Ben, or Finn. That way, you still have the cool reference, but they won't get teased about it or have such a negative connotation. I guess you could go with Leia, Rey, or even Padmé for a girl.

reply

Why can't a villain become the good guy? It is only a name. We should all be mad at George Lucas for tying a name to someone evil. Additionally, this guy is getting mad publicity and on CNN! I would think most of us, whether for a negative or positive connotation (probably more for the latter), would love to be publicized on CNN. How cool is that?

reply

Granted, Vader did redeem himself in the movies, but "Darth Vader" was the name for him as a Sith Lord. "Anakin" was him as a person, albeit a whiny, short-tempered one. There's a bit of a difference there.

He's also getting publicity for something that he really had no choice in. It seems like he doesn't even like Star Wars, let alone Darth Vader.

reply

Your last statement said it all. True, I never liked Star Wars neither. Still, news coverage? Why not use that publicity to his advantage? He could start promoting Star Wars films or even aid in one, stepping stone right into the film industry. He probably would not have to keep his day job.

And don't let your kids grow up to be cowboys.

reply

He is still making bank. He must have earned a dual degree in Operations Management as well as Biology.

reply

Why give your kid a name which opens the door for teasing? Parents need to think ahead when choosing a name. Don't name your kid after a fruit, a vegetable, or a light saber villain. So many people named their "not so friendly" dogs "Darth Vader".

reply

You think that was why he became surgical tech? I always like to think that people, who work in labs or as a hospital tech, are very introverted. Still, his career move makes bank!

reply

I have no idea why he became a surgical tech, but I wouldn't assume he's introverted. A surgical tech isn't standing on the sidelines during surgery. He/she is an important part of a surgical team, maybe second to the surgeon. This to me denotes someone who has to interact and communicate freely.

BTW, arvin, you seem to have a lot of free time on your hands as evident to you being online. Am I correct your field of work is the film industry? If so, why not check out Florida? It's been said Central Florida is becoming "Hollywood" east. See the following:

To post direct links, type [ url] before your link, and [ /url] after it, except remove the spaces. I still can't copy/paste on my iPad!

Re: the OP. Poor guy. If I were he I'd have my name legally changed. What were his parents thinking?

reply

Yeah, he should probably have changed his name. As to what his parents were thinking, I think his father might have been joking, but since his mother was still under the effects of anesthesia or whatever, she agreed, not realizing what she was agreeing to. Or something. But really, it is a cruel name to give a boy.

Ha ha, that's the only reasonable explanation!

reply

Whoo Hoo! Yeah! Thanks again! How I did the direct link: I held my stylus on the address bar and chose Copy when the drop down appeared. I then typed what you instructed, the first bracketed url after which I held my stylus down and chose paste from the drop down, followed by [/url]. Yippee! I'm a happy camper today!

reply

Yes! Glad it worked for you, Ksp!

I remember when my first posted link worked. I felt like I had found something that lay undiscovered in the computer world.

reply

Sweet! Thanks for the chuckle! I just felt that way!

I actually have limited free time. I job search while I am doing this and I have a part time, I have to leave for at around 2 p.m. Then again, being somewhat freelance, I find all my gigs off the internet. My cell phone line and email have to be open as that is how most production companies have been able to get a hold of me. There is actually tons of work, even now. One production company wants people from May 1 to 16th and I cannot do it because of my part time (production assistants need to be available the whole day and on all days, unless the production can accommodate). There is also a t.v. series shooting here from May 9th to June 16th; but again, [I]/extras have to be available all the hours and dates.

I actually wonder, but have never inquired, how many of you have so much time on here? My thought was always that most people on here were retired.

reply

As for me, I am retired. I miss working as I was one of those who loved working in my field. I was in electronics for over 35 yrs. Worked my way up to being an engineering lab assistant in R & D. Built prototypes, interfaced with the ME's, EE's and to the factory. Later became an independent contractor in the same field, freelanced.

reply

It's kind of funny how life is. When I was growing up (well earlier) and going through college, the sky was the limit and still might be. Then after I graduated, I did a whole bunch of freelance work. Most of the work was in promotions (flyering/sampling/teambuilding) etc. and the agencies still pay really well $20/hr+. Then, two years ago, I wanted to do acting so much and I found out, in time, that this was when Kentucky was starting to get a lot of film/production work. I did a lot of extra and production work. But then, I am like "Crap, I have a Biology degree and I need to go back to those roots" and now I am doing a part time that is lab oriented. Somehow, I have figured that lab jobs are where the money is at and for stability. I have to say though that freelance is a great thing; however, it can be very well short lived, when you tire at looking for the next gig.

I mean really, it seems like there is nothing else out there. All I see is sales, retail, fast food, etc. Not much to do if you are limited in skills. It is kind of scary.

reply

But, you aren't limited! You have a Biology degree. Build on that. University of Florida with their research labs could be a place to check out. Also, close to the film industry. Texas would be another state that has many opportunities and a low cost of living.

reply

But what made you leave KY? Do you think it could be this state that could be limiting me?

reply

I never lived in KY. My dad and my extended family were from the London area. In fact my paternal grandfather's name was Daniel Boone (surname omitted) They migrated to Hamilton, OH then permanently settled in Dayton, OH back in the '30's. I haven't been back in that area since 1960.

To answer your question, yes, it just may be limiting you. Extra info:

I could see why dentists were one. I went to get my dental cleaning this year and one of the practices was going to charge me $40+ on top of my insurance. Apparently, my mouth had more plaque that had to be removed than a standard cleaning!

It makes sense as to why my parents wanted me to become a physician. They apparently make $ in KY.

Totally agree, there needs to be a law to prevent parents from giving kids stupid names since so many don't have enough common sense to know it on their own. Some Scandinavian countries already have this law so every country should. Having a stupid name causes teasing in school, kids are more likely to commit crimes and even as adults it could have negative effects on their career prospects, they might not get hired or be passed over for promotions, especially in more conservative occupations like law, accounting, banking, etc.
