I suppose we could view slowness as a positive value in some areas. Unfortunately, Trump has turned slowness to his advantage and now uses delays as a way of avoiding justice for his crimes.
If he gets re-elected, he will reinstate Schedule F and purge any civil servant who fails to pledge loyalty to his orangeness.
Margo wasn't playing hard to get. She simply had no time or interest in romance or, ahem, human contact. As far as we knew, she slept in her office.
I will say that her character felt very poorly written. In keeping with her character's ideals, she should have let the KGB do their worst to Sergei. Obviously, her allegiance to NASA came first.
Nor do I accept her later explanation (in season 4) that she shared secrets with the Russians because competition was needed. Absurd. All the more so because NASA already had competition from Helios.
Agreed. He did a good job of playing a political hack, a spineless government bureaucrat, willing to do anything to pacify his boss (POTUS) and with no scientific background yet directing a science agency.
I didn't even recognize him until I came here and read this thread.
Nosebleeds are not by themselves an indication of anything life threatening. Pro athletes take similar abuse. (And amateurs do it without compensation.) If the pay is good, what's a little nosebleed?
The directors could have done it. Just look at Cab Calloway's scene where he gets the fantasy set. But Aretha is specifically delivering a message that only makes sense in the context of her dingy diner world. Her lyrics and gestures would have made no sense in the fantasy scene you describe.
Bare feet would have been a red flag that he didn't simply get lost.
I liked all the little "of course" things you pointed out. The movie had enough puzzling things so I appreciated some things were simpler to understand. Examples of puzzling things never explained:
- Why did Nylund detour to some dangerous place and leave her alone in the truck?
- How did Nylund make it back to the base?
- How did Nylund survive after getting shot in the back? (In rehab, he walked around fine with his arm in a sling but that didn't match the immobile state he was in after Edh shot him on the ice.)
What I found dumb was the scene toward the end when ten white-coated bad guys let themselves get shot down one by one. You'd think after the two or three were killed, they'd have stopped to re-assess their dumb plan to continue advancing in the same way.
1. A strong statement, yes, but recognizably absurd and everyone knew it.
2. Yes, rescuing Americans is a good goal but when done illegally - and stupidly - the film made the point that most of the guns went to the cartels which used them for more illegal acctivities, and that was just one of the examples where American intrusion into other countries backfired.
3. Congress cut funding off after the illegal program became public and an embarrassment.
Barry wasn't "completely amoral." Escobar et al would have shot Barry had he refused to run drugs into the US. It's not like he had a choice. Similarly, the CIA had the goods on Barry, too, and could have destroyed his career as a TWA pilot.
Of course, you are correct about the hypocrisy of the US. Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign was idiotic and everyone knew it. And it was her husband, President Reagan, who absurdly called marijuana "<i>probably the most dangerous drug in the United States today.</i>"
After Iran Contra became public, Reagan gave a public address saying “<i>A few months ago I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions tell me that's true, but the facts and evidence tell me it is not.</i>” Hard to believe anyone admires him today.
Let's have a moratorium on electing actors as presidents. Our two experiences didn't work out so well. Yes, I know some people adore Trump and Reagan, sigh.
On the other hand, it worked out well for Zelenskyy. I guess Ukraine is exceptional.
