It's a shame she was so under-utilised in the second half, she was by far the best actor in the film.
The culture of the time had a big part. You only had to look at the frothing-at-the-mouth, gormless dimwits who praised the film and shouted down any kind of negative review to understand that the crass audience for this kind of lacklustre, uninspired, artless popcorn fodder far outnumber viewers who look for good scripts and cinematic meaning nowadays. The fans of this are so witless they even mistook positive reviews that dared identify problematic aspects of the film as mansplained criticism of women, lol. It's simpleton cinema made at the right moment, nothing more.

I can see how it would be from the perspective of an American woman. Here, the protagonist has to go outside, interacts with a man to keep his interest, doesn't beat up people twice her size and Godard establishes her character and competence through narrative rather than expecting us to just accept it.

Yeah, she made the right call in the end, backlash nowadays is a lot more difficult for a film. SJWs will feel like they won for their pet weirdos but the irony is none of them have any money to actually see movies.

There will usually be an element of doubt where women and money are involved. Plus after 30 years of some of the dumbest leaders in their political history, smarter Americans are now aware of how 'celebrity scandals' are utilised. With the biggest moron to ever stumble into the white house in charge (thanks to still allowing angry, inbred rednecks civil rights) and his recent 'activities', they can be forgiven for rolling their eyes at another media-pushed wag the dog smokescreen. Can't disagree there. What that means though is the Marvel template is far more successful than the WBDC template. Even the unknown Marvel properties fitted with the formula have absolutely destroyed the supposedly hugely popular DC a-list properties. Black Panther clawed Justice League to shreds.
DC fans must be absolutely seething that a minor (pun intended) Marvel character effortlessly destroyed their high-profile, excessively budgeted and total failure Avengers knock off. Black Panther has set up another huge franchise for Disney while DC have to go back to the drawing board and go through yet another tired reboot.
