I agree it's a huge plot hole. Half the script ended up in the fireplace to get the runtime down. Could have had someone explain the situation in a voiceover or something like that though.

No, I cannot roll with jt. And Obi-wan was sent to the same planet as Luke so he could keep an eye on him. So chances are that he would make contact with Luke when the time was right.
