For me, it was that Emma Stone isn't that good a dancer and olny a so-so singer, and in a song-and-dance movie, that's a cardinal sin. I came into it thinking I was not going to like Ryan Gosling, but he turned out to be the best thing about the movie, and I mean that in a good way.
Also, the story is paper thin. She goes away, and it's suddenly 5 years later, and she's married to someone else and has a child. What the hell happened there? Did she have an accident and develop retrograde amnesia?
In a way, she's made out to be a shallow, vacuous bitch who spat upon the man who was willing to let her go to pursue her dream, all the while professing her love for him...
In that way, it's VERY Hollywood accurate.

And we remake the same tired movies over and over again. How many reboots of Batman? Spider-Man? The Fantastic Four? And that is only scraping the surface.
Sure, China likes their patriotic movies. Unless you're a Liberal, so do we Americans. There's nothing wrong with that. They have their country and their beliefs, and we have ours. They also make fantastic, fun movies like Mei Ren Yu, The Sorceress and the White Snake, and Into the West.
And you're quite wrong about China. Many, many of them do not revere, or even like Mao after 1949- the 40 million he killed will not be forgotten any time soon. I vacation there at least once a year, and I talk to the people all the time- they're just people trying to make a living, make babies, and live their lives, same as us.

Which denigrates it to no end. If it's a "female-powered" success, than it's been qualified, meaning that a "male-powered success" is MORE of a success. The equality term should simply be "success:" gender-neutral, and standing on its own two feet for its merits as a movie; NOT being fueled simply because it's women.

Bullshit. They had wars for land, and they had slavery. Not conjecture, documented fact. I was married to an Indian and my children are considered Indian, so I have made sure they were aware of their tribe's heritage by studying what history they have. They are from the Seneca tribe - the Seneca have NEVER been defeated in combat - and they are proud of that fact. So, how could they make that claim had there never been a war? What were the reasons for war? Greed, same as everyone else. They (or others) coveted things, so they went to war over it.
The Apache were a hostile, warmongering race long before the whites came. Same for the Kiowa. Both known for their savagery.
As to the ridiculous comment that they didn't even have the "concept of possession," well, why do you think they fought the whites? To protect what they considered their land. THEIR land, as in THEY owned it. If you don't think that's a possession, then really: change your name, because you haven't ANY logic associated with a computer.

Really late reply, but sorry: The Duke is shooting a model 1892 Winchester. Even with that said, it's no indicator of the year: Hollywood bought thousands of model 1892's, so you see them in just about every western made- it's what they had.

To me it's a tie between "The Searchers" and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon." Both were subtle, nuanced performances, though I think he should have won the Oscar for SWAYR.

I don't think you can attribute a movie's quality to the life experiences of the cast. If they weren't good enough, they shouldn't have been in the picture. Each movie should stand or fall on its own merits.

Actually, I thought it a pretty bad plot hole.
If you're going to blow someone up with a grenade, you don't announce it, wait a second, then drop it, you pull the pins, release the spoons, and drop them at the feet of the person you're trying to eradicate.
And the moment he was blown out of the truck, I know he was still alive. If he never got out, and all you saw was the truck blowing up, then you know he's dead.

So when he does an English accent, he's affecting something not his normal way of speaking, same as if an American or Australian was trying to emulate an English Accent.
If that wasn't tough enough, he's Glaswegian, and the people from Glasgow have an even thicker accent than, say, someone from Edinburgh.

Not true. early in the series he was reviled by the men precisely BECAUSE he was a ranker. The dying officer gave him his sword because he thought it would make Sharpe appear ore of an officer to the men.
It was later on, when they were all making money from looting and prizes of the battles he had a hand in winning that they liked Sharpe.
