Netflix might be sued for this

LOL! The estate of Arthur Conan Doyle is claiming that in this movie, Sherlock Holmes is displaying emotion of the sort that only occurred in Doyle's later Holmes stories, which they still have copyright on.

Greedy blood suckers.

Do you really need to write "lol"...?

reply

To show how laughable and ridiculous such a lawsuit would be? Absolutely.

reply

Why is that a problem?

Do you really need to comment on people writing "lol"?

If I developed a cure for cancer, you know how long I'd have exclusive rights to it? 17 years. That's all. Copyright law needs to be fixed! Ten generations of a family shouldn't be able to use their ancestor's novels as an everlasting money making ticket. Did the Doyles sue Star Trek, for letting Data play Sherlock Holmes? 😎

reply

Thankfully, they are set to lose copyright in the next few years on those ten or so stories that they still have copyright on.

reply

Copyright lasts for the life of the author, plus 70 years. Seems a bit arbitrary that it's based on how long the author lives. Should be X number of years from date of publication.

reply

Like I said, they need to fix copyright law. Our current system is based on lots and lots of bribe money being paid by organizations like the RIAA and MPAA to politicians - resulting in these absurd long duration legacy copyrights. You're right. It should be a fixed number of years. If the original creator dies before then, their beneficiaries can continue to collect royalties for the remaining time.

What a joke!

I had read somewhere about the lawsuit but I had no idea that THAT was the basis for it. That is just preposterous. Any judge not completely devoid of common sense should dismiss the lawsuit out of hand.

Jack warned them...
