What is this and why is this a 9.7 with 6,700 votes on IMDb?

It can't be that good.

I watched a lot of Bluey with my 4 year old niece this weekend, mostly season 3 on repeat.

I thought it was pretty good for what it was I.E. a show aimed at pre-schoolers, it’s a far cry from adult cartoons like Futurama or something but a ton better than Paw Patrol or Peppa Pig.

reply

Is it worth a 9.7 though? This feels like a joke score.

reply

I don't see why it shouldn't have a good rating.

reply

But it's rated higher than any show in IMDb.

reply

Yeah that does sound a little odd

I'm sure you realize there are all kinds of easily explained statistical anomalies. I think there's even a saying that goes, There are 3 kinds of lies - Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics. Just to let people know that numbers can be manipulated and then offered as objective data.

But in this case, I imagine it's the only people bothering to rate it are those who think it's wonderful for their kids.
A general audience is probably not aware of it and aren't inclined to view it just to have a say, I would guess.
That will probably change, and perhaps swiftly, once the haters realize there is an easy target out there.
And if the show ends up being a brand and marketed with easily available toys, that will surely bring more attention to it and likely drag down the score.

And to take this discussion one step further, I've always found IMDb ratings not very indicative of much.
I only glance at them occasionally, but there seems a very narrow window where almost nothing is 8 or better, and anything in the 6 zone is an absolute dog. So - unless I'm mistaken - I feel like we're left with 7.8s versus 7.6 v 7.9 v 7.4, etc. I'm not sure what to do with this.

reply

I've always considered anything above a 7.0 to be watchable. The thing is that shows are usually rated higher. I guess it can be explained by the fact that you can vote for shows after only the first episode. But other children's shows don't seem to be that high.

reply

Not to pursue the subject too much, but I suspect the show is under the radar enough that the rating is an outlier. Paw Patrol was mentioned, and it's been around longer (I'm pretty sure) and you can easily find the (junk) merchandise at every store that sells that kind of stuff, and more people will have harder opinions about something that is more well-known. Not that I'm going to do research, but I would think Sesame Street deserves as high a score as is reasonable, but it likely has drawn many self-styled critics and outright trolls and this probably hasn't happened with Bluey yet.

But I apologize for "spit-ballin'" this topic. I'm just throwing some thoughts out w/o much to back it up.
I just heard about the show a few minutes ago, maybe a brief mention of it previously, so in a way I shouldn't be offering opinions, but commodities marketed to children is sort of interesting in itself, so I jumped in. I'm sure it's fine family fare and I almost wish I had a reason to check it out, but this doesn't seem likely at the moment.

Sesame Street is an 8.1 with 13,000 votes. I think that's pretty high. But it also got boosted from nostalgia. It did start in 1969 after all.

I think because kids love it and the rating comes from parents who are forced to watch it and have discovered it’s utterly charming, funny, almost unbearably cute, and is packed full of positive messages for little people.

I mean, what’s not to love here…

I think for what it is and considering its target audience, the rating is pretty fair.

This is depressing. Where is the blood? The guts? The murder?

reply

😂

Right? This wholesomeness and positive reinforcement for children should be cancelled asap!

reply

For the preschool genre this show is a 10/10

reply

They don't vote on IMDb though.

reply

Its pretty damn good to watch with kids. I also like to watch rug rats with them every so often

There are 173 episodes, each 7m, since 2018! Now 24k votes and 9.4, but that's enough to make it #15 in Imdb top TV list.

reply

Its crazy. I don't get the hype.
