ABC has set Sunday, April 24, for Part 1 of a two-part event that will serve as a backdoor pilot for a potential spinoff of The Rookie. Part 2 will follow on May 1. You can watch a trailer above.

The potential spinoff follows the premise of The Rookie, which stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the LAPD. As previously announced, Niecy Nash will guest star as Simone Clark, a force of nature, the living embodiment of a dream deferred – and the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy. Her two episodes set the stage for the potential untitled spinoff next season allowing the franchise to expand beyond the Los Angeles Police Department.

John Nolan, meet Simone Clark. The oldest FBI trainee is the real thing when Niecy Nash guest stars on The Rookie, a two-part event beginning April 24 on ABC and potentially becoming a spinoff series!

Hmmm, not sure I'll bother.

I basically only started watching this because of knowing Fillion from Firefly and Castle. I've grown to enjoy the show.

The spin off seems forced. Same idea with a minority to be a bit more right on.

It being a spin off might actually count against it. I generally enjoy most procedural cop / crime shows like 19-2, Rookie Blue, Rizzoli & Isles and the likes.

This seems like it's forced on top of a story that's already been told.

I didn't know about it before watching the episodes in question but it became pretty obvious that Simone was being introduced as the character of a spin-off series, which I don't think I will be watching.

I'll be watching because I like Niecy Nash, and also because I like the idea of another rookie trying to prove themselves on another show---pretty interesting.

I have in fact watched the first few episodes. Still not sure if I will keep watching or not, but probably not.

That other show - rookie feds - has 5.2 rating on imdb. I suspect they have the same writing quality as the rookie does in season 5.
If the rookie had this type of writing starting in season 1, its rating would also have been 5/10 instead of the current 8/10 (reflecting the first seasons, but not the latest one).
