This isn’t as bad as the 5.4 IMDB rating makes it out as

Finally saw this tonight. It’s not as good as the first, but it’s pretty decent.

Besides there’s been many a stinker that has been rated better. I’m looking at you, Iron Man 2, and the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies.

I AM USUALLY THE FIRST ONE TO DEFEND LOW RATED FILMS...I HATED WW84...SO DID MY DAUGHTER...I DOUBLE DIPPED AND HATED IT MORE THE SECOND TIME...TOP TO BOTTOM...5.4 IS HIGH IN MY OPINION.

reply

I agree. There are problems with it, but gets a 6.5/10 from me.

Action heroes are just fairy tales for boys/men who masturbate too much and live too little.

reply

Agreed. The real superheroes are in the bible.

The narrative was set early on that this film is trash. People jumped on the bandwagon and unjustly lynched this film. It was a hate circlejerk. It's far better than The Batman (2022) for example which is acclaimed to the high heavens. It's honestly fascinating to watch when it happens. There is a reason some movies have review embargos. Bad word of mouth sets the narrative early on with critics being able to irreparably damage a film before it's even released to the general public.** Early viewers also have this power, when they set the narrative others follow.

A good example for me is The Shining (1980). When it first came out it was middling. But as it has now permeated into popular culture (here's Johnny, all work and no play, etc, etc), and Kubrick has a cult like fandom it's now supposedly one of the best things ever. Take away the names Kubirck and Nicholson. Take away the Kubrick cultists (and thus the conspiracy theories surrounding the film about some supposed special message regarding moon landings and the likes). Remove all the references in popular culture. Do that and it would not be considered one of the best films of all time. It's the same film it was in 1980. Don't believe tales about "aging well" or "before it's time". It's the critical reception and social aspects that changed.

This is largely why the majority of the 'GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME'tm are US releases or at least in the English language. If The Shining was the same film it is now but was made in Italian and thus didn't have the names of Kubrick or Nicholson attached and it didn't permeate into Western pop culture. It would have a ceiling of the level that Suspiria (1977) stands at. No chance it would be a top 50 film of all time. Such is the social effect on a films standing.

Fascinating cases.

** - I've heard that Disney (and I'm sure others) wine and dine early screening critics. Give them goodie bags, let the mingle with the stars. Good critical reception is often literally bought and paid for.

I agree on a few points, one of which The Batman is trash and will be forgotten soon after 2022.

IN MY SUBJECTIVE OPINION (and apparently many, MANY others) its a very poorly constructed movie. I hated the writing, most of the new characters, the overall plot, the ending actions and resolution.

And I LOVED the first WW one and will rewatch it again whenever I get the urge.

I will NEVER watch this version again ever, and regret wasting my time on the first watch.

reply

I didn't hate it, but it did have some good points and some problems, and the last act really fell apart.

I suppose I'd give it a 5/10 or 6/10, after seeing it once, and this from someone who just loved the first film - that one I'd give an 8/10 or 9/10. Don't get me wrong, the movie wasn't great cinema but it was great fun, and the finale really got to me. It was a dumb-fun superhero that succeeded at everything it set out to do, and I wish the same could be said for its sequel.

Saw it again months later. Liked it more the second time, after I'd gotten over the initial disappointment.

Not as great as the first film, a few things didn't work, but many did. The villains were psychologically interesting, the action sequences exciting, the dilemma of wishes coming true intriguing, I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10 right now, as compared to an 8.5 for the first movie.

Get lost! It's fucking terrible. And those other movies didn't have creepy weird shit like the hero raping someone. Loved the first one but this was horrible.

reply

Compared to the first one it really drop the ball.
