Um.... no. Haha. I love it, and yes it's great. But only if you love those kinds of schmaltzy feel good movies. It's cheeseroo. If you like the good fight and families coming together and conquering all odds, it's wonderful. If you want a really good similar comedy, viddy Fierce Creatures.

"Ben Affleck and guest" LOL.

good bit. Batman was looking a little chubby. I hope that's for a role.

No La La Land!

I think Casey has that locked down. Hollywood seems to be pushing him as the new it boy.

reply

I don't know that Casey's career will change all that much even with a win. He was perfectly cast in a great role, and he delivered. But, unless he's more charismatic and more versatile, and can change up his vocal style with line deliveries more than I've seen from him, I don't think he's going to be a mainstream leading man. He's more of a character actor for a certain kind of role, and will probably stay (and prefer) to stay that way.

I am thrilled LALA LAND lost screenplay. LET THE BACKLASH BEGIN!

That film just came so highly recommended, and while I liked it I didn't LOVE it...and that makes it seem like it was just so-so, in retrospect : (

reply

Cute movie. It got the music awards. That's about right.

I highly recommend it. It's a great movie and a very inspirational story.

I'm fine with that. The script aside, it was a very well put together movie.

I can respect why a lot of people won't like Affleck's win, regardless of what they think of his performance. On the one hand, I try to separate the artist from the person, the performance from what may or may not be true about the person in real life.

OTOH, there are some things that should matter too much for an award (and its consequent benefits) to be strictly about the work.

OTOH again, I don't know anything about the allegations against Affleck, and I'm not sure anyone other than the parties involved can know. All I know is I personally think his work in Manchester by the Sea is great.

So with four arguments and counter-arguments with myself on this, I can see anyone feeling either way about his win.

reply

Ryan Gosling gave a fine Light Comedy performance, so I'm glad he didn't win. Denzel Washington always looks so DOUR! Casey Affleck's movie I didn't see....so I will just have to trust it was a just choice. He's certainly competend in what I've seen him in (GONE BABY GONE is about it.)

reply

I'm glad Ryan Gosling is choosing roles that are or seem like a good match for his instincts with lighter fare (haven't seen LLL or The Nice Guys yet, so can only speculate on those based on what I'm hearing about his performances, but I thought he was well-cast in The Big Short).

Loved Denzel Washington in Training Day, but there is something about his screen presence that's inaccessible to me. Maybe it's because he seems to favor dignified, serious, traditionally masculine characters. Is there a great performance from him that's humorous or emotionally warm? He seems to project an air of authority that for me dominates other aspects of his screen presence.

From what I've seen of Casey Affleck's filmography, I think he's very talented within a certain kind of role. He's great in The Assassination of the Robert Ford by the Coward Jesse James, and Manchester by the Sea. Very good in Out of the Furnace. Good in Gone Baby Gone and Interstellar (though, to be fair, he has little to work with there).

Hi MC! Late to the party, but got here in time to see Casey take it. YES. It was a fantastic performance. 9, have you seen Manchester?

Isabelle Huppert, please. :)

9, I haven't seen much of Stone's work, including La La Land. What's your favorite Emma Stone performance?

I've only seen her in Birdman, she hasn't pulled me in as a performer yet, but I need to see Easy A and The Help.
