what the show really is

I don't think satire or parody is really the goal.

He wants to do a Trek show, but without making it such a mythos featuring larger-than-life characters. Star Trek showing the toilet if you know what I mean.

People are catty, phony, petty, kind of like what one sees around your office. Trek as it would be in real life.

With jokes, often bad ones. I mean when you make a pun on the word "joke" calling it "yolk" that has to be a bad joke, right? But even bad jokes contribute to a lighter mood. And there are unique jokes to be told, e.g. his wife cheats on him, but not with just anybody, but with an alien who ejaculates out of his eyes. ;)

It is so much like The Next Generation. However, the jokes SUCK! They are not funny and take me out of the moment. Monopoly jokes while discussing the legal rights of a child???? Quoting Beyoncé as Earth literature???? It just doesn't work.

If they were going to mention board games, they should have at least mentioned some that are better than Monopoly.

There have been poetry books that solely consist of lyrics to Beatles songs so Beyonce as poetry may not be far off.

I think most of the jokes are pretty funny. And quoting pop songs of yesteryears is of course a nod to the fact that today Shakespeare is "high culture" but in his time, it was pop culture.

I agree. Galaxy Quest was doing Star Trek too. If this show had better jokes, it would be pretty good. I like that it's optimistic. Star Trek has become too dreary for me.

It really is about 80% Star Trek and 20% family guy. Personally I like it, but it seems like a lot of people just wanted a spoof comedy.

reply

Considering that this is the closest thing we have gotten to real trek in 10 years. I don't give a shit if its not funny. If it can deliver interesting stories like the 3rd episodes. Then it can have all the fucking bad potty humor it wants. At this point im not watching for the jokes, anyways.

"..but not with just anybody, but with an alien who ejaculates out of his eyes."

They are not his eyes. They are holes above his eyes. Why do people make this kind of mistakes, it's so easy to get it right. He does it at least twice in the show, and yet you still got it wrong? Maybe it's YOU that .. oh gosh, I don't want to finish this joke.

I think the original poster's assessment is correct. The show is much like "Star Trek", but with less pomposity, and people behaving more as they do in the real world. It has benefited from cutting back on the comedy from the early episodes, and has found a good balance. If they would drop the silly aliens, like the ones played by Patrick Warburton and Norm MacDonald, it would be just right.
