I'm pretty sure it was the way in which he talked down to the person. He considered himself better than the lawyer because he was young, black and unproven. If it was an older white lawyer you can bet your sweet ass he wouldn't call him son. Though one could argue that if it was a young white kid just out of law school he still might call him son. In fact I'm not even sure it's a black / white thing. I think it's just a matter of respect. That's it.
