What was the paper Deniro made Leo sign?

Near the end of the movie Deniro came to Leo and made him sign a piece of paper what was it? I expected it to come back into the film but it didn’t and I’m so confused

It was the agreement to engage Hale’s lawyer, so Ernest couldn’t testify against him. You really didn’t put that together?

I understood it to be a will of sorts giving his oil rights (which he would inherit from Molly when she died) to “the family” (meaning his uncle) in the event of his death. Leo knew what it meant - that the moment Molly died and he inherited the oil rights, his uncle would have a strong incentive to have him killed.

Why did DeNiro even want all that money?

He was about to die either way.

family

But he was willing to screw his own nephew for this money.

What family did he also have?
Truth be told they never explored that too deeply.

reply

The real William King Hale was in his late 40s when these events occurred, much younger than DeNiro.
