Doesn't make sense

When you can't hear your own voice, you usually end up shouting because you falsely assume you're not talking loudly enough. Dude never once shouted or otherwise spoke at an inappropriate volume. Joe didn't either. In fact no one in this movie ever did. They all had perfect pitch. Amazing!

Joe clearly was in control of himself.

Other people in the deaf community talked loudly, or did loud noises. This was especially seen in the school with the kids, and in the table during lunch.

Ruben was still hearing some sounds during his entire deafness trip. He only lost it completely after the surgery. So he could also control himself. It's ok.

It would look weird if he did that.

Joe clearly practiced his speech for a long time. He knew when he was shouting and when he wasn’t.

For Ruben, I think he was still able to make out 20-30%. So that’s why he wasn’t screaming

I THINK it has to do with how much later in life you've lost your hearing. After 25 years or so of speaking normally, I think you'd be able to fall back on that...on your regular speaking voice. You'd feel the pressure of speaking too loudly, you know?

No it was a flaw in the movie. I have known people that experienced significant hearing loss and have even lost some myself and you speak louder than you should. I only realized I was also doing when I watched a video someone took at a birthday party and realized I was way too loud compared to everyone else. The people I know that have suffered so much hearing loss that they are wearing hearing aids are even more telling because if they are not wearing them they talk extremely loud almost shouting, but get back closer to normal if they are using the hearing aids. Joe would have done the same thing and been overcompensating for the loss by raising his voice. Understanding he had the hearing loss wouldn't have made a difference.
