Overrated

We’re so starved of proper films these days that a decent effort like this gets pumped up beyond its actual merits.

It’s a good film for sure, but fell short of the buzz that has been building around it.

Pros:
Good acting all round.
Not afraid to breach Woke guidelines and show a woman out of her depth.
Fantastic sense of place, you could really feel the cold.
Taut, deliberate, economical direction. Good pacing.
Nice score.
Realistic sudden violence.

Cons:
Tedious Woke ‘evil white males’ again 🙄
What’s with all the mumbling? I had to use subs several times.
Sanctimonious ‘issues’ film seriousness, no joy or levity of any kind.
Didn’t bring much new to the table, basically a retread of In The Valley Of Elah or Sicario.

As I say, still a good film and I’m glad they’re still making ones like this, but not the hidden gem it’s reputed to be.

reply

I thought that the last 40 minutes pushed it into greatness territory.

reply

It’s a solid thriller, well-acted and with a few surprises up its sleeve. I don’t recall many people calling greatness... for me, it’s a respectable 6/10, an enjoyable and reasonably intelligent film but.no keeper.

reply

I basically agree but I’d give it a 7.5/10. It did what it set out to do very well, but left me kinda cold, if you’ll excuse the pun, and the po-faced messaging annoyed me.

I’d still recommend it though, especially to people who love a snowbound thriller.

reply

I did think the wintry settings were very well-used - I could almost feel the chill through the screen. I am quite a tough grader so 6/10 from me is a respectable score!

reply

A solid thriller and well acted, but only a 6? Serious question, I've seen good descriptions of movies but with a low rating and have to wonder what it takes to get to a 10.

reply

I think 6 is about right. It’s a reasonably effective, nicely-mounted film but nothing outstanding. On my scale 5/10 is okay/worth a look, 7/10 is approaching excellence, and anything j rate 8 onwards would be a favourite to some degree.

I don’t give 10s easily. I guess I have about 40-50 of them, and none from the last few years.

reply

Oh well at least most people liked it. That’s good enough for me.

reply

Just saw it not too long ago, I thought it was a good movie but parts of it seemed to linger on for a little too long, like, all the snowmobile riding and whatnot. Plus, Elizabeth Olsen (FBI Agent - Jane Banner) fell a little flat for me. She just seemed out of place and perhaps miscast. However, is it just me or does she look a lot like Maggie Gyllenhal? I swear, they could be sisters.

I think the current IMDB rating of 7.7 is fair, I'd probably give it a little lower than that like... 7.2/10. The ending was impressive though. Best part of the movie for sure.....

reply

Yeah Olsen and Gyllenhal both look like someone squashed their faces from the front, then squashed their noses upward a tad, kinda like they walked into a door by accident just as the wind was changing.

Both decent actresses, with Olsen fractionally less unattractive.

reply

Lol. I kind of see that. I don't mind Gyllenhaal though. She's a pretty good actress. I just didn't find Olsen very convincing in this particular role.

reply

Disagree. It’s better than any Avenger film that gets pumped to 8/10

reply

Avengers is a totally different category - those are massive Hollywood blockbusters, my point was that Wind River was overrated as the ‘undiscovered indie gem’ that it was increasingly being hyped as.
