Maybe if the timeline for Discovery took place after Star Trek Voyager or during the kelvin timeline it wouldn't feel so out of place as a Trek show.

Totally agree. I think Seth MacFarlane called it a spoof in order to not be sued for copyright infringement. I wish he would do a "spoof" of Star Wars and have Hamill in it.
