Is this all it takes to get nominated for an Oscar now?

Just be a female director, making a movie about a female teenager being all angsty and rebellious like? That's all it takes? Christ no wonder they suffered record low views.

Maybe not best picture material but I think Lady Bird is a pretty good film.

Decent movie, but it isn't among the best directed movies of the year... Nor among the best movies despite it being a list of ten now...

I could see how it might warrent a screenplay nomination...

Were you jumping up for joy when this walked away with nothing on Oscar night?

reply

No. I was disappointed it even got nominated.

It was the year the Oscar's wanted to heap praise on women, seen as the whole Harvey Weinstein thing and MeToo moment was in full swing. So as Will Ferrell said in Zoolander "Hansel, he's so hot right now". Well the Oscars and Critic's decided "Ladybird, that's so hot right now" so they heaped all their praise and award's consideration on it. If that was directed by a man, I bet that wouldn't have got any award's consideration.

In the end, rightly for me it won none. It didn't deserve any. Maybe Metcalf for supporting Actress was the closet thing to anything Oscar worthy for that film. I think Ronan has given better performances then she did in this.

I said it when this film was released, that it be forgotten about in the years to follow. I stand by it.

It was one of the best examples of its genre and one of the better films nominated that year imo. Even if you don’t like it, it was widely hailed by critics - it won best film and actress from the NY critics, so the Academy can hardly be called out for nominating it.

I much preferred it to the big winner that year.
