USA pulls out of NATO next decade?

I think it's entirely possible. US is headed back into an isolationist posture I think. Russia is going to feel like it has a free hand in Europe.

No it has to do with an increasing sense among the US public that we are overpaying our share in NATO and that its days as an actual protective umbrella for US concerns is over without a serious Cold War threat. Basically US debt is a serious political issue, and people are raising questions as to why we are bothering to pay into something like NATO.

reply

As I see it, NATO is an extension of the Pentagon, which is the most powerful force in the world today and it is what keeps the USA (or American oligarchs) rich by maintaining the petrodollar through military force, allowing the FED to print unlimited dollars with which to bribe people and governments throughout the world. I don't see a retraction of that power without a major setback and loss of the petrodollar. I really can't see the scenario of Okkupert being realistic yet, but I'm thinking about it. At first, when they said the US withdrew from NATO (without saying why, at least up to episode 6), that it would be the same scenario as in V For Vendetta where the US had descended into civil war. That's also a distinct possibility, but maybe the Norwegians were too polite to say so, unlike the Wachowskis.

How much do 'American oligarchs' own, and how many are they?

"basically US debt is a serious political issue"

no its not. we just passed a huge tax cut, the lion's share benefiting the very wealthy.

posturing about the debt when it is convenient for "conservatives" is a serious political issue.

reply

Yup. The 2.5 trillion Covid-19 stimulus package Republicans couldn't rush out the door fast enough further proves the lie the debt is about anything except GOP posturing when Dems are in power.

reply

It's absolutely possible that the US would withdraw from NATO due to populist pressure.

But in reality, it would remain an 'unofficial' member with winks and nods between military leaders (who would recognize that US departure is a populist measure, and not a strategic one).

In fact, this all ready happened with France.

reply

If it was up to President Trump, the USA would withdraw from NATO. It wouldn't make a lot of difference, the US military contribution to NATO is now small.

reply

If Trump wins, the USA will pull out of many alliances and turn isolationist. He seems to admire Putin. It really is madness and a disaster for the world.

reply

It's either pay up or they're leaving. But maybe the military Joint Chiefs will talk some sense into President Trump, the US involvement in NATO is more for their own benefit than as underpaid security for other Countries.

reply

"Pay up or we are leaving" - Sounds like a mercenary army rather than a superpower country.

If Hitler was able to pay-off the US in 1940s, would they have not come to the rescue of the Europeans?

reply

Russia has an economy the size of Italy ... altogether the EU has many times the wealth and military of Russia. The US should butt out.

hello I am from 6 years in the future, and the US is the Oprah Winfrey of giving away money.
