Donald Glover's 'acting' stank!

He was so bland, it didn't seem he was even bothering to act. I felt absolutely nothing for his character. What a retrogression from the charismatic Billy Dee Williams.

Alden Ehrenreich, on the other hand, I thought did a pretty good job, given how big the shoes he had to fill were. He wasn't doing a Harrison Ford impression, but tried to reinvent the character on his own. It was a tough task to accomplish and I think he pulled it off well, given what he had to work with. Particularly the shoddy script.

Didn’t help that they dressed him up like a gay Jimi Hendrix at the end.

Couldn’t take him seriously.

reply

Alden was worse imo

At least he made the effort to speak and move like Billy Dee as Lando, which was enough for him to sweep the acting honors in this film.

Which is kind of like winning foot race against a field of amputees, but a win is a win.

reply

this was not Lando but a Spaceballs parody of the character. One of the weaker elements of the film.

One would have imagined that Lando when being younger was a poor, struggling smuggler dreaming of making it, and who started dressing big when becoming a well paid administrator. But I did not imagine that he had the Falcon full of metrosexual capes and gear, and was into pansexualism with his butt ugly SJW-droid.

Now I know better, I guess.

reply

I respectfully disagree with you on one minor point, that of Lando's clothes.

IMHO Lando is not the kind of guy who started out rough and then started dressing slick when he hit the big time, I think Lando is the kind of guy who started out poor but who would spend every cent he had and steal a few more on the sharpest clothes in his sector of the galaxy! A lot of people with big aspirations do that, they do their damndest to look like rich bastards, in the hopes that the poor will be impressed and the rich will welcome them like brothers, which eases the process of becoming a rich bastard yourself. And because Lando is smoooooooth to the core, and he did succeed in becoming a rich bastard at least once. Probably several times.

well, official canon now validates your image rather than mine. I always saw nuveau riche Lando, not a natural born peecock. But he never had lots of dimensions anyway.

reply

Official canon says that I'm not the only person who sees Lando as a "natural-born peacock"! Personally, I always thought of him that way, the sort of person who spent his infancy crying if his diapers didn't have the most flattering possible cut.

And who got rich because he couldn't stand being poor. I like to think he got rich after the Emperor was defeated and the Republic was restored, and spent the rest of his life picking out the finest robes and capelets in the most luxurious fabrics the galaxy had to offer.

reply

It would have been nice to see a greater contrast, but it's clear that character development isn't the greatest priority these days.

reply

Glover didn't bother me at all, although Jon Kasdan should have keep Lando's supposed love robots and "pansexuality" to himself. I thought Ehrenreich was bland but wasn't the total disaster that was predicted, either. I liked the four-armed monkey dude the most, and Emphys Nest the least. Oh, I didn't care for man-eating Chewie, either. What I didn't like most of all was the under-exposed orange-and-teal grunge look of the film which gave the film an overall drab and oppressive feel which didn't help the film at all.
