Kessel Run, kraken thing

So the Kessel Run is just a cloudly catacomb thing with a big squid thing lurking around?
WTF I always thought it was some kind of smugglers race.

reply

It sounds like a race, but it's always actually been a dangerous shortcut used for smuggling.

So the falcon is suppose to be a famous ship... specifically for doing the Kessel run in less than 12 parcects. Which is suppose to remark an unmatched amount of speed.

Now that we have seen it... what was so special about what they did that would make the falcon famous? I always thought it was a light speed modification and navigation that accomplished a feat that is remarkable and unmatched.

reply

Parsec is distance. He did the run in a shorter distance by cutting through the maelstrom.

reply

Cool. But what does that have to do with it being a fast ship more so a famously fast ship? I suppose you could make the argument that a typical freight ship couldn't pull off the maneuvering and pace to accomplish the danger feat of traveling through the maelstrom.

Just because Han bragged that it was famous ("You've never head of the Millennium Falcon?") when he was trying to get Obi-Wan and Luke to give him lots of money, doesn't necessarily mean it really is famous.

I actually think that no one is dumb enough to intentionally get that close to a maelstrom. Han didn't really mean to get that close, but he was definitely up for bragging about it and exaggerating and making it sound like there was something special about his ship!

reply

Good points! I suppose maybe there was nothing really special about the falcon other than Han and Lando exaggerating it's abilities and their stories. Seems everybody who sees it is bitterly disappointed "what a piece of junk" "this bucket of bolts is never going to get us past the blockade". However, she always seems to pull threw.

Still the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy line and rey's this is the ship that did the Kessel run in less than 14 parsecs. Apparently also has the best navigation system known to Lando.

I have no idea what was happening in that KR scene..like u said always figured it was a race of some kind that Han mustve cheated in by making the MF go faster somehow. (abit like when in ANH ObiWan mentions to Luke he knew his father who was already a great pilot and we think he mustve been an adult not that much older than ObiWan - and as evidenced with the oldman we see when Luke takes his helmet off at end of ROTJ- ..then we see in Ep 1 hes all of 5 years old)

The Kessel Run is generally the route they take to smuggle spice from Kessel. In that context it could be considered a race between egotists looking to one-up each other, though almost certainly coming short of the Millennium Falcon's record.

What they did with it was actually an interesting idea if you break it down. The Millennium Falcon is a good ship, but not really special enough to improve the time/distance of the Kessel Run. So what they did was have it smuggle super fuel instead of spice which allowed them to zip through the maelstrom, secretly cheating the unwritten rule of the race between egotists, but technically accomplishing the "Kessel run" in 12ish parsecs.

For the real science fiction nerds out there, it's basically Han Solo's version of Captain Kirk rigging the Kobayashi Maru.

reply

The giant squids and gravity wells made the shortcut too dangerous for most pilots. Han took the risk to complete the run in 12 parsecs.

reply

The Falcon was certainly fast enough for an old man.

reply

Kessel was a broken down ship in the part of the galaxy named “12 Parsecs”.

In his conversation with the old hermit he was referencing he and the wookie’s reliable mechanical skills.
