‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Fandango Presales Double ‘Black Panther’s’ Haul

Looks like the third billion $ plus movie this half-year.

According to the ticketing company, “Solo” had the second-best first day of presales of the year, behind only “Avengers: Infinity War.” “Infinity War” also doubled the numbers set by “Black Panther,” in addition to outpacing the last seven Marvel movies combined, including massive titles like “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” and “Captain America: Civil War.”

That's quite an unbelievable story. No way Solo is breaking record in presales.

Unless...

Unless they fear the franchise being damaged by the expected fiasco in this movie and they've started to fake numbers. Or maybe they faked it before, who knows, but definitely this time they've gone too far. Solo breaking other records than flopping? As T.S.Ellis would say: "C'mon man!".

reply

Hmm I dunno, Star Wars doesn't have the same fatigue that Marvel movies do quite yet.

reply

Star Wars is reaching the exhaustion point very quickly. Anyway, it's a fair point... but Solo???

No way.

If we were talking abut Episode IX, I could believe it. Even people who hated Last Jedi could go to see how the whole thing ends. But again... Solo?. Nope.

Maybe all the Star Wars movies have been toppling Marvel, and it's just worth pointing out now because of the pedestal Black Panther is put on?

reply

Well, Marvel is not from being toppled yet, though it's gonna happen, and sooner, though not yet. And I don't think Star Wars will be the one to topple it. It seems that Disney wanted Star Wars to be their new mega-franchise, but they've screwed it.

And the Black Panther pedestal was more of a political (and temporary) one. There was a couple of threads about favorite superhero movies in the Infinity Wars page, and you didn't see BP there.

I'm skeptical. Normally, I buy advanced tickets for Star Wars movies in order to have great seats. I see plenty of empty seats in my theaters for Friday and Saturday including peak evening times. Only the Thursday evening opening has fewer available seats, but I still wouldn't have a problem finding a good seat, if I were planning to buy tickets - which I'm not. Different story for me with Rogue One and Last Jedi tickets which had all the good seats taken months in advance.

I think Disney and their cohorts are trying to BS us since I believe many fans will sit this one out or not go opening weekend as a protest. I'd like to see actual figures and not vague references from Fandango.

As others have said, I'm skeptical. Fan reaction towards Solo seems to be underwhelming and there have been a ton of production problems that are well documented at this point. Aside from that, this is not a episode film. Non-episode Star Wars movies don't tend to be as popular. Not that I think this movie will do poorly, I just have trouble believing it will break any box office records.
