It seems like anyone who built a substantial structure in the wilderness with glazed casement windows and a massive fireplace of sophisticated stone masonry would also have fitted the door with a latch, or a simple bar.

I always wonder why neither Ruth nor Warren question the door further.
They ask what happened to it and both times the conversation is deflected..

They were constantly investigating everything around and asking questions. They knew something was fishy. They were building up to interrogate about the door. And then Ruth was poisoned.
