So that's how they got rid of Cas Anvar...

At least there wasn't a recast

reply

I was wondering what they would do. I'm glad they didn't turn the character "bad" to spite the actor. Alex was a good character.

reply

What exactly happened to Alex? Heart attack? Aneurism?
They just did a screen freeze and then said he was gone.

reply

I think it was a stroke?

reply

Yeah, it was a stroke and a major deviation from the books
All based on a lot of anonymous allegations and meat sockets that weren’t happy when they failed to get Cas to 'put a ring on it'

reply

As much as I dislike Cancel culture there were too many allegations and complains for this to be something made up.
The guy clearly has a problem.
But frankly this is something the police should be dealing with. I don't see how is this grounds for firing the guy.

reply

If the police did investigate this that’s when it all starts to fall apart, this was a trial and judgment by Reddit and Twitter and the firing was at the insistence of the writers James SA Corey who you’d think would be smart enough to spot fiction

reply

I haven't read up on what happened to the actor and how he got fired. But its such a shame. He is such a cool dude in the show. Like one of my favourite characters actually.

So did he actually film his death scene? It just looks like a freeze shot of him with some blood floating around. Clever way of doing it in that case.

reply

The interviews that came out right after the finale all say that it was something they were considering well in advance. They said that with war comes loss and that the crew needed to feel a loss to make it all real.

Makes sense, but I don't quite buy it. The character didn't die in the books, and, while I know the show always needs to make changes, this one is just a bit too much of a coincidence.

Maybe, but maybe not.

reply

That's a 100% lie tho. There are screenshots floating around the web where Alex is present at the party and is present at the reunion with Amos.
They had to edit him out and re-film a few scenes.

reply

Really!?! I'm not actually surprised. I think the way he died was kind of week. If they had planned it out, I just think it would have been written better. The whole thing honestly felt thrown together at the last minute.

I can't really blame them for handling it this way. I really respect everyone involved for not speaking ill of Cas Anvar, even if it would be completely justified. The cast made statements over the summer, and they are refraining from speaking ill of him now. I think that's classy.

reply

Shame about the actor, he was my favorite character on the show.
Felt like he embodied Serenity/Firefly for me.

reply

Yeah, I don't buy that either. I think any time there is an ensemble show, it is very problematic to kill off a main character. If the writers do their jobs, then the characters feel like a family. Killing off a member of the family unit makes the viewer feel that the family will never be whole again, and I think it just casts a pall over the whole show. For a movie, this might be ok, because movies are short and we move on afterward. But tv series are years long and we get attached to them, so killing off a main character, I think is a much bigger thing.

Breaking Bad, of course is the exception. There, it's hard to remember who lived, rather than who died. But Breaking Bad stood out because it deconstructed the whole idea of the happy family, along with Walt's whole thing. It was so good I think it counts as art. But I wouldn't want every tv show (or even most tv shows) to be like Breaking Bad.

I'm looking at you, Dark Matter

reply

Naaah, it was a shitty re-edit that had confused for over 10 minutes till the medbay scene where Holden and Nagata are talking.

reply

Thanks to this topic, i know understand why his death felt so odd.

No idea what he did in real life but he was the only crew member of the Roci that i liked, so that sucks for me i guess.

reply

I don't know what's going on in the real world and don't care. It's probably BS. His death is as lame as Wash's.

reply

Nice comparison!

That's one of the biggest reasons it felt last minute to me. It was just such a blah death. I know they took another character's death from the book and used it here, but it was still so week.

reply

well, it was an emergency death. If any death has a right to be weak , its a sudden unscripted one.

reply

"an emergency death"

good one.
