Starts out slow, does it pick up?

Is it just me or does this show start out really slow? I'm use to the genre (big fan of BSG, Stargate, etc.) and I know sometimes things can be slow in the beginning, but usually things pick up once you get immersed into their world. Can the same be said for The Expanse?

reply

Depends on what you consider slow. I didn't find it slow, even in the beginning. But yes, it picks up later.

reply

Yep it picks up, I found it a slow start as well. Keep going!

Good to hear. I've tried to "restart" several times, only to make it a few episodes through. I'll try to bite the bullet this time and make it through.

I didn't think it started out so slow, but I can understand that it could be for some. But believe me, it picks up pace like crazy. By almost mid second season now it's turned into maybe my favourite sci-fi of all time!

Yes, it gets better and better each episode. It develops characters and setting in the first episodes. I love the show, season two > season one

I don't think of it as slow, as much as the story is so dense and thick, that it can't stay on top of all the action all the time. We're dealing with 3 very diverse groups, on their own, and as they interact, and because of that, there's a lot of ground to cover each episode.

If you like really rich storytelling, along with great characters, stick with it.

I've seen rich storytelling, and I've seen "so bad you gotta sift through all the crap to find anything good in the story." This is the latter.

Any long story takes a while to fill in the gaps. I would say that this show is very slow in filling in the gaps, and also is very reluctant to fill in those gaps. You may be frustrated to find that things are not explained to your satisfaction even in the second season.

I did not notice that it started out slow. Every show has to
introduce its world and conflicts. It gets going pretty well.
I think it's pretty good. I like it as much or better than
Serenity. I don't usually stomach Sci-Fi series on TV very
well.
