Never heard that before.

Axel is a Skandinavian/Germanic name, so yes, it is a real name. I assume the name stuck by the time the project was still attached to Sylvester Stallone.

Yep. Actually met a girl named Axel once. She was teased for being named after Axl Rose but assured us that it was a real name before he came along.
