I wish this had a better title.

"Arrival" is another recent sci-fi movie with a really bland title. "Moonlight" and "The Gift" are other examples among many. There's a movie title problem going on these days.

I happened to like the title for "Arrival" as it (spoilers) has multiple meanings after you see the ending.

Moonlight seems to be a nice truncated version of the play from which it's based: "In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue". That title would be even more confusing to audiences unfamiliar with the source.

Well, it might feel misplaced if you think of the word in the "military" sense, ie. large-scale destruction.

But annihilation is also a technical term:

the conversion of matter into energy, especially the mutual conversion of a particle and an antiparticle into electromagnetic radiation.

to vanish or cease to exist by coming together and changing into other forms of energy (such as photons)

Which is what this movie is about.

The title is awesome, and the only reason why I was interested in seeing it! “Annihilation” is such a nihilistic, badass title, especially with the R-rating at the bottom of the poster to show people like me that this film means business. Great film too.

yeah, I agree, Arrival specifically had a crummy title, particularly since there was already "The Arrival" and the oddly named "Arrival II" which were both kind of fun. Arrival was just confusing for the sake of trying to have it make sense, which it did not.
