Why do you think certain people survived looking at it?

Could it be what happens to people who have looked at it and never got the chance to kill themselves after a time and that is the result, or could it be something to do with them being sinners or bad people before this event happened?

We can pretty much surmise that whatever this thing is it's supernatural so maybe this is all God's doing and he's simply separating sinners from non-sinners. Non-sinners kill themselves in what looks like a pain-free state and go to heaven, and the sinners are left behind as punishment (hell) to help seek out the non-sinners left around?

Because of weak writing.

I don't subscribe to any bullshit like that, but simply that the creatures kill morally and spiritually good people and ignore the evil psychopathic murderous scum. Obviously, the latter and the creatures think alike.

It reminded me of the James Herbert novel 'The Fog' (nothing to do with the John Carpenter film) where a - duh - fog turns people insane. This results in murders, mass suicides etc., but it's almost noted that some people are acting normal and the narrator comments that these are the people already unhinged in some way, so rather than go 'more mad', they switch to acting quite regular.

I took the people 'unaffected' in Bird Box to be of the same ilk.

It was pretty clearly implied that it was people with neurological issues that were not affected. The guy in the grocery store they alluded had mental issues. And the rest came from the insane asylum.
