Why'd he lie to her at the end?

I really like this movie and it's #2 for me from 2019. But there's this one thing that I didn't really understand or like about it, and that is the fact that he lied to her about Germany winning the war, then they go outside and she realizes that this was in fact a lie, and she slaps him. This just seems pointless to me, and feels like forced drama, but I'm hoping one of you can maybe explain why this was in character for the kid to do and make me appreciate this movie a little more.

He has a crush on her, and I suppose he wanted to keep her in the house to keep her safe, and to himself. Maybe he was hoping she would return the favour, but she didn't like being lied to - she depended on lies to survive, but didn't like others lying to her, I guess.

he's a 10 year old kid who lost his mom and ar all alone. He lies so he doesnt loose here to. He is after all 10.

Since the good guys won the war, Elsa no longer had to hide and ergo... she was free to go! As such, little Jojo (who of course had his mom taken away from him) didn’t want the girl he developed feelings for to leave him and leave him all alone. So what happened at the end between the two was by no means forced drama - it was realistic. And I for one knew Jojo was going to do this after he found out who lost the war. After all, this wasn’t the first time the kid lied to Elsa this way.

He was a Nazi, she was a Jew. In the previous scene where the allies were killing the Nazis his old commander called him a Jew to save his life, sacrificing himself in the process. So yeah he didn’t want to let her leave but also didn’t want to be killed for being a Nazi.

If you need an explanation for this simple scene, then you must struggle watching more complex films.

Several reasons, most of which are obvious:

1. He’s 10 and doesn’t grasp the consequences of his lies very well, as seen with the fake letters from Nathan.
2. He had a crush on her and didn’t want her to leave him.
3. His entire family, most of his friends, and his celebrity idol were all killed. He was alone and afraid, and he knew the girl would leave if things were safe, so he lied to keep at least one close person in his life.
4. He was afraid of getting in trouble for housing a jew by his nazi comrades.

Any one of these reasons alone would work just fine as a valid explanation.
