Sam Rockwell character

*spoiler

He covered for the girl when she didn't remember the birthdate of JoJo's sister. He knew the fate of JoJo's mother and obviously rushed over to JoJo's house to deal with the SS (or was it Gestapo?) Does the Sam Rockwell character's actions make sense here? He could easily have been found out. The papers showing her birthdate were right there. He even offered them up to be looked at.

reply

He was a good soldier in a time of utter madness and he only offered the papers when he thought the Gestapo officer had challenged his confirmation of them. He was just trying to be decent at a time when acting so could get you killed.

reply

He was covering that he was gay, so he covered for her being a Jew

reply

Yes.

He was gay? What did I miss?

reply

How could you miss it? Is hinted at through the movie. In the final battle through his clothes, makeup and pink triangle, he tells the world he is gay.

reply

I saw the costume as an act of colourful f*ck you insanity in the face of a world gone mad. At no point did I think 'oh, so he was gay'.

SUCH A GREAT CHARACTER...SYMPATHETIC IN THE RIGHT MOMENTS,GREAT ARC,THAT COSTUME AND HIS CLOSETED WAYS...SAM ROCKWELL IS SO AMAZING.

reply

I think it’s quite obvious that he could relate to Elsa... He, too, had to hide who he was. As such, he was being sympathetic at that moment (knowing where he was coming from I don’t think his intentions were truly evil) and it was certainly believable.

Great character, great performance by Rockwell.
