Neimann unlikable

What an egotistical, big-headed prick. The scene where he breaks up with his girlfriend because he wants to spend more time up his own rectum, made me want to punch his lights out.

In his defense, Fletcher's abusive and bully-like behavior may have scarred Neimann pretty bad. If you re-watch the beginning of the film, you'll notice Neimann was somewhat of a gentleman.

I personally concur. The movie doesn't shy away from compromising the moral makeup of the hero. He's confronted with harsh people, and it definitely takes a toll on his attitudes and behavior. This is what actually happens to people in real life. People are malleable.

That's the point of it. That he becomes so obsessed with becoming a great drummer that he becomes a horrible person

Do you not believe people should have the right to choose which passion or love to pursue? He realized he could not have both, and that he would have to choose one or the other.

You sound like you think people should be forced to stay in relationships, regardless of what they prefer to do.

I thought he made a difficult decision, and it must have taken as much guts to end it as it did to ask her out, which made me respect the character more. He was honest and straight-forward, which I also found respectable.

he and nicole are totally different kinda person, he is ambitious and has a passion to pursue, nicole is just like most of the teenagers dunno what to do, just want a normal life.
even though he didn't end their relationship at that point, they won't go far
think about it, when you are in love with a girl no matter how hot she is, but she has everything against you

If you believe protagonists need to be likeable, than limit yourself to disney movies.

If anyone in the film deserved to get their lights punched out (why stop there), it was that bonafide scumbag Fletcher.

Andrew? Honestly, he did Nicole a favor. Things could have ended a lot worse between them if they had stayed together. I mean, fact is Andrew wasn’t going to let his dream go, so he basically told Nicole that he was gonna be a pain in the ass to be with and he wasn’t willing to commit to this relationship at all moving forward. As is, why hate him for not mincing words and wanting Nicole to move on? Of course he broke her heart, but would it had been better if he had forced himself to stay in this relationship and likely put Nicole through some unnecessary bs as his obsessive self attempted to pursue his dream? He was certainly being vain, but also arguably being considerate in his own way.

Moreover, to me it’s apparent Fletcher is the main reason why Andrew had to “force” himself to end his relationship with Nicole (no doubt Fletcher seriously started getting into Andrew’s head). Was Andrew egotistical? Yes he was, albeit having someone like Fletcher (who was infinitely more egotistical) pushing him around like he did didn’t help the guy’s character one bit. And I don’t fully agree with Andrew being a big-headed prick, especially given that this once mild-mannered but fairly ambitious kid ended up being pushed to his limits both physically and mentally by an abusive asshole.

The bottom line is, Andrew did not want to throw everything he worked hard all his life for all away, and because drumming/Fletcher ended up consuming his life, he wanted to avoid any “distractions” that were possibly going to get in the way of his dreams. In closing, Andrew made the right decision (right as in not causing further damage to someone else) by breaking up with Nicole. I would absolutely argue that he messed up with her (she would have been been there for him when he needed her unlike his music), but that’s besides the point. The dude wanted to succeed, I guess, no matter the cost.

Yeah. He was driven before encountering Fletcher, and caught up in obsession after, in a sort of Stockholm Syndrome. You made a nice summation. Andrew is a basically good person who is very ambitious, and is in the throes of a dysfunctional situation which feeds into his ambition & obsessiveness. Cutting Nicole loose was, in the context, a morally correct & courageous action, because she would have been otherwise in the middle of a toxic situation he had no willingness or ability to disengage from. He also wasn't cowed, like everyone else in the band.

I actually respected him for being honest with her and not wasting her time.
