Why one Palpatine? Why not an army of Palpatines?

In the lesser loved so called "prequel" films they showed that stormtroopers were in fact an army of clones of the same person.

In this one, they showed (as far as I am aware) that a clone of a force powered Palpatine also had his force powers - all in the genetics I guess?

Given that's the case, why didn't we see an army of younger (yeah, also why wasn't his clone younger?) Palpatines all forced up to the max and blasting of their force lightenings?

reply

Do you honestly thinking Palpatine would share power with anyone? Hell, even if he allowed multiple versions of himself to exist at once, they'd all turn on each other.

Plus, as we've seen in the movie, his clones aren't guaranteed to have Force powers. And even if they did, I go back to my first point.

And Palpatine only has one soul. He can't inhabit more than 1 body.

Now that's a film I'd like to see!

Is that right re clone's not being guaranteed their genetic force powers? (Haven't seen it, so would be interested to here how they played that out)

Surely original Palpatine soul died on the Death Star, so they'd all be a new team of guys anyway...

reply

It's explained in the movie at least one clone did not have Force powers, so yeah it's not guaranteed to be passed on.

If Palpatine's soul was destroyed on The Death Star then where did they come up with another one, LOL? The movie doesn't explicitly state this, but it's very clear that his soul is possessing a cloned bodies. It's similar to a Force ghost, except that he's literally possessing another body.

Interesting thanks.

A bit philosophical for Disney Star Wars maybe but surely a clone itself has a soul and they are copies of Palpatine so...

reply

One of the clones referenced in the movie was referred to as a "son" of Palpatine. He did not have Force powers. He was also not Palpatine. He was an individual.

This is another thing that bothers me about the whole clone thing. Palpatine can transfer his consciousness to a new host, which is what he needed Rey for. However, how the hell did he get into the clone in the first place? And if he somehow escaped the Death Star to transfer into the clone, why bother with the clone at all? And why an old feeble clone and not a young vibrant clone?

It all seems so poorly thought out.

reply

kuatorises rightly points out that Palpatine would want no rival for his power. But why not make a whole pile of Snokes? Or start combining Snoke's Force-powered DNA with the clone troopers and make some troops who can psychically predict attacks?

reply

I don't know if Snoke really had a conscious mind. I kinda get the impression he was just a shell or an avatar. Even if Snoke had a conscious mind and free will, Palpatine would still have to control him part of the time. I get the impression he can't possess more than one body at a time.

reply

That might be true. Bottom line: none of this was really clear. What a mess...

reply

I would have gone nuts. If we're getting nuts, lets go nuts. There's a Palpatine on every one of them star destroyers with their own planet destroying weapons, and they all escape and seed the entire universe with evil. There. Now Star Wars has Emperors and Deathstars at every corner of all the galaxies forever and ever. Now they can tell the same story over and over till the end of time.

reply

Sounds like something from the mind of post-ROTJ George Lucas. We can call it The Special Editions.

reply

The first thing I asked myself when I found out he was a clone was why the hell would he be cloned as an old decrepit man?
