Overrated...?

Having watched a couple of episodes I dont get the appeal of the show... seems pretty ordinary tv series where thd comedy and drama detract from one another... seems the premise was a bit weak as well... a very TV aesthetic as well, but thats understandable...

Is it just the novelty of having an all woman prison show?

The first season is based on a true story, onward from there it's all fictional.

I think you have to watch a few episodes to get into it but if that doesn't work it's obviously not for you.
Most prison shows are popular no matter what, same with comedy shows (that are actually funny). So i think it's probably so popular because it's not your typical drama/action prison show but rather a feel-good comedy show with some pretty decent story lines. It also has a lot of serious scenes and story lines.

You are correct, Renovatio. REALLY went down hill. I chalk it up to the actors expecting too much exposure and forcing the plot to go in way too many directions. Also, there are not enough protagonists. You don't care if anyone lives or dies.

I think it's very watchable,but I do think it's overrated.

Some of the characters are well written and well acted, while others are over the top and it's difficult to believe them.

Overall I'd say it's a cut above your run of the mill TV show, but not more than that.

IMO HBO slanted heavily in the nudity/lesbian arena to boost ratings, too often at the expense of the show. It's HBO's tendency to do this that puts me off the network. Done well, no problem. Done for ratings, meh, no thanks.

Yeah, it's going on a bit too long now. I agree, a bit overrated.

I started watching season five and skipped to the last episode after watching the first few. It's the same thing over and over.. . . .mistreatment of prisoners, relationships among the women, crooked jailers, riots, etc. Didn't need five seasons of that.

Don't get me wrong. Prison conditions are bad all over for men and women. But how did the prisoners get there in the first place?

reply

I like the first two seasons. It's gotten completely out of hand with the new-age feminism and political shit.

There's a difference between social commentary and just shoving your own brand of political rhetoric down everyone's throat and doing it at the expense of the plot and every character's traits.
