I think why they seem better to modern tastes is that Lange and Sarandon are more naturalistic in style. (although these portrayals are a bit more campy)
Davis and Crawford were from a different era and they had a more stylized, artificial style. Like theater, almost. Especially the line delivery. That isn't really in fashion now and it's not to our contemporary tastes. You have to be into that style of acting to really appreciate it.
Yes, if you watch Davis in some of her roles from the 1970's and 80's she is more conversational. And even since then dialogue in film and TV has relaxed even more.

I wouldn't want to rate the other three, but in my opinion Davis is the best of the four. As the director said she would leap off a cliff when others wouldn't even go near the edge. And her makeup decision for Baby was brilliant and courageous.
She also has more Oscars.

I agree and I have a lot of respect for Lange and Sarandon as actresses (less for Crawford because she was never a great actress) but Davis is a legend for a reason. She was one of the first actresses who could really disappear into a character.
She had a strong personality and she tended to pick (or be picked for) strong female parts but there are also a lot of movies where she shown uncharacteristic vulnerability (like Mr Skeffington or Now Voyager for example).
I have no respect at all for Sarandon because she's a flaming libtard. I have no opinion of Lange. Crawford was a bit spooky looking, but a good actress.
But Davis is better than all three put together imho.

Actually,Crawford was a pretty good actress,especially when she got a part she could sink her teeth into. Davis usually owned whatever role she played,whether it was heroic or a villainous role---so they both were good in their own different ways.

Btw, I just heard that Susan Sarandon supported Bernie Sanders, then Jill Stein for President. She then had to change her phone number because of the harassing phone calls from Clinton Supporters. Hmmmm. Sounds like some intelligent thinking on her part. Perhaps I misjudged her. My respect for her just edged up a bit.
