In that straight-up fight with Killmonger (neither of them on the herb), T'Challa kinda got his ass handed to him. So in a sense...Killmonger rightfully earned the thrown. Though I'm glad T'challa regained it, and ultimately outwitted Killmonger. Still, a legitimate defeat is a legitimate defeat. Zuri had to step in and save his ass.

Except that the rules of the fight were either you win by killing the other guy or he gives up. Neither of those happened. Killmonger assumed T'Challa died and never thought to find the body. It is a flaw in the system that the body of the defeated (if killed) should be found before the challenge is over.

I think that was sort of the point: that a well-trained outsider (albeit with royal blood) could legitimately win the throne, it showed a weakness in their traditional system of succession
This weakness is further demonstrated by W'Kabi's willingness to follow Killmonger even after T'Challa turned up alive. W'Kabi didn't respect the rules any longer, if the rules got in the way of his & Killmonger's goals.
That's a great point. T'Challa shouldn't have even taken the challenge. He didn't need to.
