Is the Boxoffice a disappointment?

Considering it's unlikely to surpass Avatar despite much higher ticket prices, is this a disappointment? Are 2.3 billion not enough?

reply

Of course not. You can never expect a film to be the highest grossing film of all time. It's deep into the black at this point, so I wouldn't categorize it as a disappointment. And judging by Cameron's giddy recent reactions to its climb, I'd say he and Disney are pretty happy.

And those are?

reply

Definitely not. This first of the new movies after such a long break was always gonna be a hard sell. I think it must have exceeded all reasonable expectations. If the next one doesn't surpass this one, then yeah, that might be a failure.

The real question is whether or not this movie is moving merch. First movie moved a lot of merch. I'm not seeing the toy aisles packed with Avatar toys.

If anything, Disney/Fox is probably finally breathing normally thanks to how well it has done at the box office. The 1st movie happened over a decade ago and A2 wasn't a guaranteed success. It becoming a 3rd highest grossing movie gives more than enough confidence for them for the rest of the Cameron Avatar movies.

Not a disappointment, but it should raise some alarm signals regarding the sequels. If they also will be visual marvels backed by a subpar story, we will never see Avatar 4 and 5 (and I don't think many people will be upset by this).

It's anything but a disappointment. I honestly thought it would be lucky to reach $1.5 billion, given the amount of time that has passed since the original movie. That it reached and surpassed $2 billion is mind-blowing to me. And now that it's the third highest grossing movie of all time leaves me speechless. I have no idea how Cameron pulled it off. As much as I loved the first movie I honestly didn't expect the sequel to be such a hit. I thought Avatar 2 was the movie that would knock Cameron off his pedestal, especially after finding out about its astronomical production and marketing budget.

I personally am a bit disappointed but of course 2.3 billion is still quite an achievement.
