Both of them were so terribly miscast it ruined the film for me, that and the background cgi.
I thought Weisz and Williams were decent enough but the other two were just so totally out of their depth and element it was distracting and made the movie a lot worse than what it could have been.
Shame because this movie should have been a lot better than what it turned out to be.

I find that ALL of these talented actors (Franco, Williams, Weisz, Kunis) put in a terribly forced performance: a bit like watching a high school play. Usually, I find that when this happens, it comes down to the script &/or the director. In this case, I'm blaming the director: he had the talent right there in front of him but let them all phone it in. But the script comes in for its own share of blame: unnatural ways of speaking (no contractions, for instance) make actors sound forced & fake, especially to American sensibilities.
Franco did the best: he did give his character the sleazy feel of a Bad Man With A Heart Of Gold. But then, he was the only actor allowed lines that were contemporary. The others had to make do with a script that was nearly Victorian/Regency in their speech patterns, without the virtue of this being an Austen-esque period drama!
Honestly, I really don't see any other actors doing any better, with what they were given to work with. Visually, the ladies were stunningly beautiful, although really, a bad fake wig on Michelle Williams' natural beauty was very, very uncalled-for, haha!
Yes, could certainly have been the director.

shareMaybe. I wasn't all that crazy about what he did to The Hobbit actually. I preferred it as a nice little story for kids that would probably be done better in animation. The high intensity, video game realization didn't bear much resemblance to the book.

Then very best actors can elevate bad writing - take bad material and make it seem better, but those three took weak material and stuffed it into a some sacks, added concrete blocks, and threw it into the ocean, where it sunk to the depths and sank into the ooze. I mean it never was going to be a great film with that script, but with better acting it might at least have been fun.

shareFranco didn't even try! Here he is, the lead in a huge expensive movie, and he didn't take his job seriously, he was so obviously smugly above it all. No wonder his career tanked, he isn't just an alleged creep in private life, he's lazy and unprofessional on the job.
I have no idea if Kunis is capable of doing a good job. She was weak, but I've never seen her be strong so for all I know she was doing the best she could.
