If Mel directs.. A reinvention of the action film?

You get the director of ground breaking genre redefining classic movie epics Braveheart, The Passion, Apocalypto to direct this you aren't really gonna get an average Richard Donner replacement Lethal Weapon 5, you are gonna get a complete reinvention of the action genre in the guise of Lethal 5

Abit like had David Lean directed a Bond movie, or having got Stanley Kubrick to direct a Star Trek movie

To say I'm intrigued/excited would be a massive understatement

I doubt it will be a reinvention but it wont be a shitfest. Probably less feelgoody and more serious.

I don't believe Lethal Weapon 5 will ever manifest. They're too old and it's taking far too long to develop. It's just a fun wet dream project they're kicking around. What might happen however is a Lethal Weapon reboot with Mel still attached to direct.

LW5 could be pretty great if they can get most/all the old gang back. Just the nostalgia alone would be great—seeing all of them together again. Especially if they can get Roger’s family…and at least a cameo from Leo.

The latter seems more likely.
