One of the better recent horror remakes

I watched this today. It was a lot of fun. The film pays homage to the original while also subverting expectations and putting their own spin on the story. One of the better horror remakes of the past several years. 8/10.

Is it still a feminist movie?

reply

Yes, it is directed and written by women and has some clever feminist twists.

reply

Cool. I will have to check it out as I love the original.

reply

I didn't care for this remake. Even as low budget as the original was it is still miles better than this mess.

reply

I forgot this was even a thing.

I enjoyed it for the most part. (Spoilers below).

Some of the characters made somewhat questionable decisions. (Turning up to a place where they knew there was a murderer with a power drill was running around, with a couple of knives, and a flimsy plan of running around frantically if they ever met him.) But it was enjoyable.

People might call it woke or whatever, but I thought the points it made were made well, without being anywhere near as heavy-handed as the recent Black Christmas remake. For example, a lot of the silly ways the guys were behaving are often how they make females behave in horror b-movies. Almost to the point where we don't notice it any more. Having men have a big pillow fight, for example highlights how daft the trope is.

Not sure I enjoyed it as much as the original, but still felt silly and fun.

My one big objection is maybe they should've kept Russ Thorn around a bit longer. Having his mother turn up instead felt a bit pointless, and felt like the one-handed mother's revenge at the end was somehow cheapened.

Generally speaking, I enjoyed it though.

This was a solid movie, still better than the original, imo.

What exactly was solid about this film? Just curious.

I know you weren't asking me, but if I'm allowed to give my opinion, it's that this film concentrated on having fun. Which is really what slasher movies should be. Sometimes mindless, but should always be fun. It may not have been perfect, but they felt like they were trying to make an enjoyable movie. (Whilst having a few humorous teases aimed at the original movie.)

It wasn't flawless, and I've mentioned above (with spoilers) what parts of it I didn't enjoy. But if you compare it to the Black Christmas remake, it was much more enjoyable. BC felt like it included a message first, made it too heavy-handed, and forgot to make an enjoyable movie. So any point the movie was trying to make was lost because it hadn't made that point very well. SPM had a few sly winks at the first movie, and pointed out how gratuitous the first movie was. But in funny ways, and without overdoing it do the detriment of the film.
